Cryptpad is nice in general, however if you use the spreadsheet function frequent enough, you will find the spreadsheet file size inflates like balloon. I got a spreadsheet file sized 100MB, but it you export it and save it using MS excel, its only around 2MB.
Also the mobile interface is quite bad, but I think other solutions including Google, are bad as well.
It is not perfect indeed, and this level of encryption makes certain file types difficult to manage.
But for the protection it offers, I think it’s truly worth it. It also keeps improving every month. While conducting this review even it was already faster and with more features than when I used it previously.
It never became part of my toolkit because it does feel a bit clunky design wise and the loading times are rather slow. But other than that seems to be a great product.
It depends on what your needs are of course, but CryptPad allows to create an account without attaching it to an email, or even to use it without an account at all. This can be a very important feature for some people.
Additionally, CryptPad allows to share links for collaborative editing with people who don’t have an account, which Proton Docs does not offer. This can also be a big benefit, depending on your usage.
Finally, I think it will take a while before Proton implements a spreadsheet and other office suite applications some people need right now.
Standard Notes is a smaller project which just aims to provide notes rather than everything Google Docs offers. Realistically, it’d be more feasible for them to incorporate a simpler notes app in their tech stack than a Google Docs replacement. They already struggle to add new features to existing products so it’s better they don’t spread themselves even more thin.
