I am very stupid with respect to networking stuff. I am trying to connect a google onn to vpn secured wifi. I don’t want to use any vpn app in the google onn itself. I dont want to use a vpn router because that involves messing with my main router and ip tables and all that and it’s beyond my brain.
won’t bore you with the details of what I have gone through the past 5 days. but it turns out that protonvpn windows software does not allow lan connection if you are on the free plan and lan connection is apparently needed for vpn hotspot. now you might say “stop being a cheap bastard and pay for it” except no matter what card I try, it gets declined. all cards are vanilla visa, amex gift cards bought from the store. for obvious reasons I am not using my bank issued card. and I dont know how to use bitcoin.
I am thinking there has to be an open source windows software out there where I can plug in openvpn credentials from my protonvpn account and that allows lan and hotspotting? I tried openvpn gui, it did not work, apparently it does not allow lan traffic? and I read somewhere the openvpn gui kill switch is useless.
If you are willing to pay for it, then I recommend you find a way to do that first. There are several ways to pay for it. If the types of cards you’re trying to use do not work (because they are not real cards), then I recommend you ask a friend to help you, or buy a giftcard first (for which you can use your real card) and then redeem it to purchase a Proton VPN subscription.

The free Proton VPN is very limiting for many reasons. It is only functional but does not have any features one may want including the ones you want. So, I implore you to consider finding a way to subscribe to it and then use it as you want.
Lastly, I recommend using WireGuard as your VPN protocol. It is fast, reliable, secure, private, and superior to Open VPN.
thanks. I actually discovered something called wiresock by a post on this forum and kind of got it working with free protonvpn but abandoned it after I read somewhere that wireguard has a vulnerability that exposes your real ip during handshake or something?
If you’re a beginner, you’re susceptible to misinformation. WireGuard is perfectly safe VPN protocol to use. Please don’t think otherwise. Exposing your IP depends on how you use WireGuard and set up your VPN. I’m not sure you’re thinking about it properly.
