sign up with a major vpn provider like express, torguard, windscribe, proton and not something nobody’s ever heard of (so that I can have some assurance their software developers knew what they are doing and any bugs would have been found by now)
activate kill switch, connect to vpn
mobile hotspot on windows 10, share vpn tap adapter with local connection 2*
connect google onn device to this vpn hotspot
the way I understand it, this is leak proof, because if the vpn suddenly gets disconnected, the vpn tap adapter simply stops sending anything to local connection 2* and google onn experiences zero connection to the internet.
what would you change about my plan to make it more leak proof? I understand microsoft is not to be trusted but I dont want to use linux because I just dont get it.
mobile hotspots are pretty notorious for having leaks. Why not create a wifi on a new vlan for your vpn connection and then connect your onn device to that?
You can and should in this case install/get VPN on your router directly. Best to use one where you can install a custom firmware like Open WRT on your router or one that comes with it like the Banana Pi Open WRT router.
Proton VPN works best as it supports streaming well.
thanks but I dont want to install vpn on my router because not all devices in my house should be connected to vpn. I have explored the idea of a dual router but it’s too much of a headache, I would have to go in my main router’s settings and mess with some settings so that the vpn router and main router don’t conflict with each other. I dont want to mess with my main router.
You want to something but you’re not willing to do what’s needed to achieve your goals. I don’t know what to say other than that no one can help you here because there is no other solution.
You can always have exceptions and set it up such that you ensure which devices you don’t connected or be passing through the encrypted tunnel of the VPN. So, only select devices are VPN connected.
It’s really not. Just get a travel router and connect it to your WiFi and you’re good to go.

There are still several ways you can go about it but you’re unwilling to do it. There is only so much I can do or say to help you. Good luck.
I have looked at gl.inet routers. I don’t think you just connect it to your wifi and you are good to go. on youtube there is a video explaining how to set it up. the video is 20 minutes long.
It’s really not that difficult. Of course, if you’re new to tech savvy, then it can be a little daunting but its simple enough. Trying new things is how you learn and grow to do more things in the privacy space if you’re amenable to continuing to learn more. Don’t let a random YT video scare you.
Depends on your router’s capabilities. The router I use has a “VPN director” that allows you to set what devices or destinations use the VPN and which don’t.
