How could've chrome/site know my ip adress?

So i use an always on vpn on my phone with the killswitch enables so everything goes through my vpn (proton since im broke)
And i noticed that somehow a site i was using knew the country i was actually in, then i saw ads in my language and then i did an ip lookup and the site told my my original ip and not the vpn’s one.

How did this happen?
What should i do now?

Could you clarify some things?

  1. First of all did you check that the VPN connection was on even with Killswitch?
  2. You use chrome, that’s one fault
  3. Ip lookup? You mean checking your IP by searching “what is my ip”?

Fuck.
So chrome was installed in my work profile, with shelter. And i thought vpn’s would work… They don’t. How could i have been so dumb lmao.

I used it on smspool and deposited funds, can i still use them anonymously or ehat should i do?

What should i do now?

Hah yeah… was going to ask similar things.

To @Glucose2099

Always use https://ip.me/ to check IP. And https://www.dnsleaktest.com/ to check for DNS leaks. As long as it is not your ISP’s IP showing on both the websites, you are good.

And this can only happen if the VPN was somehow disconnected even though you may have turned it on. Free Proton servers are always heavy on load so you may be moved around to different servers at their behest to balance the load.

Yep.

I main iceraven.

I used ipleak.net but i digured out why.

You’re stressing out. Calm down. You’re still fine. Other entities know you visited the website, they don’t know what you did on it since it had HTTPS.

On my personal profile it’s all good but on work it’s not.
Look at the reply i send if you didn’t already.

Then the lesson here is to always make sure you use personal profile for personal things and work for work only.

Yeah thats what i was thinking, is there a similar app to shelter which can sandbox apps? But still use vpn?

I don’t use Android so I can’t comment or recommend things with accuracy or specificity.

I was using shelter, so.its still personal apps but in the work profile since shelter uses that.

Okay thanks for the help anyways

Let the work profile be as it is. Its for work stuff.

But on personal you can do what you want. Don’t worry yourself to no end for no good reason. But hopefully others can answer should they know.

You can just install a VPN app in the work profile, either the same one or a different one.

If your priorities are privacy or anything remotely close to “anonymity” (as you alluded to earlier), you almost certainly shouldn’t be using Chrome regardless of what profile you use it in, unless you have no other option. If both profiles are personal, Chrome usage is probably not mandatory.

It’s been a couple years since I used Shelter or any of the Android Work Profile functionality. But my recollection is that you can use a VPN in one or both profiles.Have you double checked to make sure you are correctly understanding shelter + VPN usage?

Why not? Is it really that unprivate?
Also if i use iceraven, how do i proiect against fingerprinting? I use ublock origin and some iceraven settings but I’m guessing that’s not enough.

I don’t think you can use vpn from personal profile into work if that’s what you’re referring to.
Well shelter separates work files from personal files so i see why it wouldn’t work but at the same time i see why it would work, I’m guessing that there is some kind of way to do it.
Either way i guess i can just clone my vpn app to shelter and use it like that but it’s kinda weird using 2 vpns at once lol

A VPN needs to be setup in each profile.
Having a VPN only in your main profile will have no effect on a work or secondary profile.
