I am running into this issue on github: “Your user account has been flagged, and cannot search code”
I looked into making a github support ticket to get my account unflagged, and it required me to give my phone number which I do not want to do. I haven’t messed with voip yet, and that seems like an expensive and time consuming hurdle.
Does anyone have a solution? Do I need to make a new account and try to have normal looking activity on it?
Using github to some extent seems unavoidable, most project mentioned on privacyguides use github including the website itself…
Github is pretty hostile to both e-mail aliasing, and also to many private e-mail services. But when I’ve encountered this, reaching out to support and changing e-mail addresses has resolved the issue for me, without the need to provide a phone number.
I don’t know if anything has changed recently. The last time I encountered this was like a year or two ago.
That may be the case now, but wasn’t the case the two times I had accounts flagged (shadowbanned) right after signup. I think a lot of the time, there are many variables that effect how many hoops you’ll have to jump through, and how far they’ll make you go to verify your legitimacy.
One option would be use a throwaway number like @WhinyHamletPayer suggested. Another is just to create a fresh github account with a different e-mail address and see if that can sidestep the problem.
