Cake Wallet: Monero via DFX requires KYC now. Alternatives?

I’ve used in the past Cake Wallet and DFX via to obtain Monero. When I tried it again now (all accumulated transactions below 1000 CHF), it asks for identification:

Anybody knows what to do here? Changed my location in the VPN but no help. Would appreciate any suggestions for alternatives to obtain Monero without going the way over Bitcoin.

I only recently learned that it was possible to buy Monero via Cake Wallet’s app with no ID and just a credit card, depending on your location.

My first thought after learning this was:

  1. How does Cake Wallet or DFX determine your location?

And my subsequent thoughts were:

  1. If you’ve never bought from them before is it your IP?
  2. What if you always use a VPN and your IP frequently changes?

Suppose your VPN IP is in Australia, and people in Australia are not required to provide ID.
But then you pay with a German credit card.

  1. Does Cake Wallet or DFX now determine that your location is actually Germany and not Australia?

  2. Why do some countries require KYC and others don’t? How does DFX or Cake Wallet determine that?

I’m sorry, I have never bought Monero via Cake Wallet, so I am not of much help, but I am very intrigued by your situation.

Do you know if people in your country or other countries are still able to buy without KYC?

It always has required KYC. Or at least when I bought like 25 EUR worth of Monero a few months ago, I had to KYC myself. Still, I think this service’s quality is miles above anything else right now. Prices are also decent. If you don’t want any KYC just use Haveno.

@PurpleDime : as I used it only sporadically in the last ~12 months, I cannot really answer your points. But looking at the answer below you, it seems it requires KYC for all transactions now.

@Script1743 : thanks for the feedback, that’s really a pity. Just to be sure, you mean the same detail of KYC like I show above, right? Before you could just obtain XMR via Bank transfer, where they also kind of know you, but with much less detail.

In general, the guide on Monero seems to need and update then ( Private Cryptocurrency Blockchains - Privacy Guides ). Guardarian does not have the option for XMR anymore and DFX seems to require extensive KYC now. I also installed RetoSwap/Haveno but it looks a bit sketchy to me. It had only ~25 offers, minimum 20 EUR and the note of PG “be careful when sharing your bank account or other sensitive information with your trading counterparty” does not really help.

So maybe I will go down the route of obtaining Bitcoin and swapping it inside Cake Wallet. If anyone knows a provider where you can “just” buy it via bank transfer or similar (and not the whole identification process like for a bank account), please let me know.

Okay, good to know. Cancelled my standing order to them.

Does anyone know an alternative for non-KYC Monero purchase in unfree countries like the EU or UK? Otherwise it seems that the best option is to buy Litecoin and swap to Monero.

I kept looking around but did not find any solution..

Here a user wrote the latest options, which seems comprehensive to me (Spoiler, KYC needed): Turkey to Ban Anonymous VPNs - #17 by Expert4870

Oh, I didn’t know.

Do you guys know about https://retoswap.com?

There are also offers on https://xmrbazaar.com/

Make sure to research, use multisig escrow, document, etc. These are the main no-kyc option.

That’s what I would have done too.

Did CakeWallet and/or DFX at least make a statement about this change?

To me, it’s unacceptable not too. This is not something you want to find out at the last minute when you’re about to make a purchase.

After some more research, it seems DFX is the only provider of direct fiat → Monero purchases in Europe (EU, CH, UK). All the CEX don’t offer Monero at all.

So the question is whether it’s better to buy Litecoin on a big CEX with KYC and then swap to Monero without KYC, or to buy Monero with KYC on DFX. The latter is easier and cheaper (in terms of total fees) and the only extra info revealed is that you bought Monero rather than Litecoin (so what? it’s not illegal). Once you have the Monero, nobody can see whom you pay with it and how much Monero you have in total.

I reached out to DFX. They still claim you can buy without KYC from them, just that in my case (and I suppose in OP’s case) I was “flagged”. They knew my name because of the bank account I used for the bank transfer and they did a “fuzzy search” with an AML data provider and it turned out that somewhere in another country there’s a PEP (politically exposed person) with a slightly similar name to mine. Even though it’s clearly a different name. I suppose they want to play it safe and not risk any AML-related fines.

This is INSANE.

Did they actually tell you this?

First, you don’t have the same name. Second, even if you did, if you are of no relation to that person, they can’t penalize you for it. Third, if you were of relation to that person, and that person happens to be a criminal, you can’t be presumed a criminal simply because of you are related by blood/name to someone.

Note to self. Never do bank transfers to pay for something I want to be anonymous.
