I am guessing Github is preferred as more people know it more than Gitlab or other alternatives for any contributions they may be willing or able to make. Either way, it is meant to open source things - doesn’t quite matter (unless you have highly specific rationales) where it is hosted.

But everything pretty much happens on GitHub.
