Did you take in mind that the offensive content can also harm other users? Because honestly much of what is hidden are just inappropriate insults. At least besides offtopic posts. Another last category we see often are ads, often also for very dubious services.
If that’s the case, why not just leave? If you don’t like the work or the current situation, what benefit do you get from continuing in this community? Hope this doesn’t sound an offense or insult but I like logic.
Yes, I understand the consequences associated with the responsibility of viewing hidden posts, and exercised care/consideration of those factors before posting and voting in this topic.
Not liking the work != distrusting the moderation.
I like what PG does and I like this gorum, however the trust in moderation is not big.
I think that’s fair feedback for PG’s team, although I’m not sure it fully matches the situation you describe. You said you like what PG does and you like the forum, but you don’t have much trust in the moderation. The thing is, the moderation and the community support are largely the same people, volunteers spending their own time keeping the place running, answering questions, and dealing with conflicts.
So I guess the real question is: what outcome are you hoping for? That the moderation style changes completely, or that the community adapts to your expectations?
From my perspective, sometimes it’s simply a matter of fit. For example, I use GrapheneOS, but I’ve had a hard time interacting in their groups. I also tried joining the NobaraOS community and found their spaces difficult for me. I don’t think that makes those communities “bad”, it just means they weren’t the right place for me.
You can’t really walk into someone else’s house and expect the rules to change around you. Communities develop their own culture and moderation style.
Personally, do I love every moderation decision here? Not always. I’ve had a couple of disagreements myself. But overall they seem to try to keep a balanced tone, and mistakes will happen, they’re human.
That’s why I think some of the current drama and demands in the community feel a bit disproportionate.
