Adguard vs uBlock Origin Lite on iOS

They say if it ain’t broke, then don’t fix it. I’m aware that uBlock Origin Lite is now available on iOS. It’s free compared to Adguard. However, besides the price, why would anyone consider uBlock Origin when Adguard works? Can I add a customer filter via a URL in uBlock Origin?

I don’t know if there’s a technical reason but you should use what’s working for you best.

You can add custom filters, similarly to the uBlock Origin extension on Firefox or Lite on Chrome. You have to add it through extension settings in the Safari app, but it’s doable.

FWIW though I prefer Adguard. Some people say they notice a performance difference, but I haven’t. Plus I think Adguard blocks more and better, and I use it for DNS filtering so might as well.

Adguard for Safari should be free though, is it not any more? I bought Pro before the Pro app was a subscription, so YMMV. If you have to pay, go with uBlock Origin Lite. There’s no reason to me to pay for Adguard when uBlock Origin Lite is free and you’re only using Adguard for a Safari extension (or even DNS, for that matter, since you can just use their public DNS for free).

I don’t know if AdGuard is free or not. I bought a lifetime license. I was thinking of trying out UBOL if it make sense. It doesn’t sound like it does.

The only reason to use Adguard over uBO Lite is for the DNS features which is behind a paywall but you have the ability to exclude certain SSIDs. This could be useful for using certain networks that block custom DNS because its tedious to manually to turn off the DNS Profile

AdGuard (even the free version) for Safari has a working (if clunky) element picker. uBlock Origin Lite does not. It’s way too neutered compared to the full fat uBO. Yes, it’s lighter, but only because it’s bringing a blunt knife to a gunfight.

Ok if you have the full AdGuard, I’d just use that. There’s not enough of a performance difference to me to switch, as much as I’d like to support uBlock Origin.

But I’d encourage you to give uBlock Origin Lite a spin, maybe in a different Safari profile. You never know until you try. Some people think there’s a performance difference, but it’s mostly subjective, I think.

I think both are solid and I’m still using AdGuard myself, but there is a longer prior discussion here for more context:
