A reminder on keeping threads on-topic

I want to give a gentle reminder to keep threads on-topic.

If you want to start a side discussion that is is prompted by an existing post, but does not serve the original conversation/topic, please use Discourse’s reply as linked topic feature.

This is a great way to politely split off the conversation in the original thread, keeping that thread on-topic, while giving you the freedom to have a conversation about a new idea.

This will create a link between the two topics that people who are interested can follow, while others can ignore if they are not interested.

How to reply as linked topic

  1. Write a reply like normal

  2. Click the reply icon in the top left[1]

  3. Select the Reply as linked topic menu option[2]

  4. Add a new title to your topic and choose the appropriate category

  5. Continue the discussion

How to Reply to a Locked Topic

If you want to continue a discussion on a topic that is locked (for example, a completed topic), the process is very similar to above, except you’ll notice the “Reply” buttons are missing which makes Step 1 trickier

All you need to do is highlight some text in the thread you want to continue the discussion with, and click the Quote button.

This will open the new thread box, where you can select the appropriate category for the new topic, and reply as a linked topic like normal.

You of course should not do this to resurrect topics that were closed for moderation reasons.

Thanks everyone!
