Windscribe Partners with Kagi, Notesnook, Addy.io, and Ente to Create a Privacy-Focused Alliance

Kind of ridiculous that Windscribe still isn’t recommended by this site. But in any case, it’s cool to see different services working with one another, even if it’s just for promotional reasons.

Just because something is not recommended doesn’t mean it isn’t worth using or isn’t a great product. PG recommendations are not the end all be all.

This Alliance is a good option. But I wish there were a dedicated website where people can go and simply sign up for one and get discounts for the other directly on it at the same time if you’re trying to move to more than one alternative at the same time if one has only just then discovered other options worth using and buying. It would be a more dedicated space to get them all easily.

Edit:

I guess there is one but on Windscribe’s website and not a separate one. Would love to see the list grow though. But this is a great start.

There’s a pretty extensive discussion debating windscribe under a tool suggestion thread, feel free to check it out & contribute. I dont think it meets the PG criteria yet, though I haven’t been following too closely

An alliance is cool amongst underdogs in a competitive industry. I am weary of oligopolistic aspirations

This is brilliant honestly. We need more alliances like this everywhere :yellow_heart:

It’s nice to see for sure. The latest blog entry from Tuta about 5, 9, and 14 eyes turned into a Proton attack.

Some of them aren’t super obviously shown, but you can see who some of them partner with on their sites. The ‘alliance’ existed somewhat before this, it’s nice to see companies building each other up rather than just putting down their competitors though. It’s kinda like the thing where if you have a membership at a local gym you can get discounts at other local businesses.

There is also an alliance named the Privacy Heroes created by DuckDuckGo, Brave, Proton VPN, Tresorit, Threema, and Proton Mail but as far as I know it’s just a website and an email address :man_shrugging:

I don’t think this is official though. Is it?

If one was following “closely”… PG recommends ProtonVPN that doesn’t meet the criteria. And there’s definitely question marks about iVPN too, esp post UK’s Investigatory Powers Act.

The word is, the PG team will any day address all of this once the holiday season is done.

Such “alliances” do crop up every once in a while; ex: https://globalprivacycontrol.org/

Yep. I am waiting singing the song “I Am Waiting”.

Edit:

Sorry, but I feel compelled to tag @jonah. Are you amenable to or able to provide an update here on a potential ETA on how PG is going to amend or change the way or improve the way it recommends tools?

It’s disappointing that after years and years Notesnook still hasn’t had any sort of independent security audit. It’s been listed on the roadmap as ‘planned’ for at least 3 years, from what I recall.

There’s also Expand your private universe with friends | Tuta from tuta, where they’re partnered with Ente, Notesnook and Volla.

Wonder how all of these agreements have been done in the backend, strange that some of these services clearly have shared ‘friends’ but not everyone likes everyone else back…

Maybe for Proton VPN, but there’s unfortunately a lot of other things that gets lost in the wind.

I too think an overhaul is in order, specifically for site suggestions in general and not just tool recommendations.

This seems to be the clearest explanation of how website changes are made, but the approval process for suggestion threads is still unexplained. All we know for certain is that approval is at minimum typically prioritized based on the number of votes it has.

One might think that approval is based on the veracity of the suggestion after rigorous debate has taken place in the reply section, and it may very well be. But if it is, it proves to be difficult with the amount of suggestion threads there are with lengthy debates like the ProtonVPN thread, the open source password managers thread, the Vanadium thread, the Trivalent thread, etc..
