Why not Opera?

I didn’t find anything in the forum saying why not. And I think that its important, otherwise I can’t say specifically why its bad.
It seems to have trackers in their website, the rank in tosdr is a D, but there could be more reasons that I didn’t find.

All anti recommendations are removed basically because there are waay to many things that you shouldn’t use.

Opera is a company that collects a lot of your data when using their browser also the company is Chinese hands afaik.

PG has a curated list of thing that you should use instead of any other. If some tool is good to add people suggest it here for discussion and if it makes sense it gets added to the website.

Yeah, that’s why I asked in the forum. This way anyone searching for discussions about Opera will know!

Thank you. This is good to know.

Could you redirect me to some sources that show the data collection?

I’m currently evaluating different browsers, and trying to place Opera somewhere on the spectrum.

Pertaining to ownership structure:

It is currently headquartered in Norway and listed on NASDAQ. In 2016 the browser was sold off to a consortium of Chinese investors for 600 Million:

  • Golden Brick Silk Road (Shenzhen) Equity Investment Fund II LLP (“Golden Brick”).
  • Golden Brick Silk Road Fund Management (Shenzhen) LLP.
  • Beijing Kunlun Tech Co. Ltd. (“Kunlun”).
  • Qihoo 360 Software (Beijing) Co. Ltd. (“Qihoo”).
  • Yonglian (Yinchuan) Investment Co., Ltd. (“Yonglian”).

If you are able to read in German, there is Kuketz-Blog. Mr Kuketz analysed the traffic coming from the browser and found several hints that Opera tries to collect your browsing history in real time. The methodology is described in the article. Conclusion: Opera browser is a catastrophe privacy wise… Opera: Datensendeverhalten Desktop-Version – Browser-Check Teil13 • Kuketz IT-Security Blog

Its by far the worst mainstream browser. Just read their privacy policy. They collect the sites you visit etc.

They also flex about being an “European” company while being 100% chinese owned. They curiously forget to mention that in their marketing.

I read their privacy policy and next to transmitting every URL you visit for a “Malicious-site Check”, they use your browsing history among other data to build a profil on you and serve targeted ads directly in the browser.

Thanks for that source, now I can use it to convince my friends using Opera to get rid of it :slightly_smiling_face:.

Exactly, I read that too. IMHO, I’d choose Google Chrome over that trash since I would rather give my data to Google than the Chinese government. Of course, however, both are bad options and far better alternatives exist.

For any Opera users reading this, here is a source which confirms. Essentially:

All Chinese companies, public or private, are required to have a member of the CCP on staff to hand down official party edicts. In addition, many companies have an internal CCP committee that comprises part of the governance structure.
