Which (De-Googled) OS(s) are you using on mobile?

I’m sure they’re both great. I try to remove as much bloatware from my phone / PC as possible. But if GrapheneOS is only supported on Pixel phones, that really limits my options when there are other phones I prefer. It’s like if I can install Windows on every PC, but I can only install Linux on a HP laptop. At that point, I would stick to Windows. I’m also thinking about other users. There are people who are adamant about using iOS over Android, or one phone brand over another.

The reason would be that they don’t have a Pixel phone. Imagine if I could install Windows on every PC, but I could only install Linux on a HP laptop. If not for that, I wouldn’t have an issue installing GrapheneOS, but I do have a problem with switching phones I currently have.

It’s still a balancing act. They have the right to be well informed, which includes learning about the recommended options, even if they aren’t currently accessible to them. Once again, however, I completely agree that the first and foremost priority should, of course, be ensuring people have their questions meaningfully answered.

That really sucks. I bought my phone about 3 months ago and if DivestOS supported that phone, I would’ve installed it due to recommendation only to then install a different OS now. Support for custom OS could be up in the air or eol at any point.

I was thinking about this, 1.8k views but only 89 votes, what if it was like a Google Forms + poll thing where people who dont have a PG Account can vote on the form and be able to view (read only) results of it.

Actually it would still be highly inaccurate since market share varies across countries, where many dont really access English sources / social media.

I would expect market share of non-stock roms is below 0.1% of total Android phone sales. (Definitely un-informed guesses)

agreed, the count of people on PG let alone techlore is only in the thousands which also More or less is the same amount when it comes to the PC Hardware which is 1%

Please stop judging people and guessing their needs. Not everyone has your life. Being sarcastic doesn’t help.

I also thought like this but I realized that some people take a lot of videos (and keep them and their pictures on device to not have to download them from their cooud when they need them, if they ever have a cloud storage).
Not everyone can afford a cloud storage option.

Maybe not a must but at least a convenience feature for people who hear a lot of music (me) and live in a country with bad cell coverage (me). In this case they may also download videos in Libretube and maps in Organic Maps.
This may also be people with a long Signal history. My signal already has nearly 10 gigs of data. Some people maybe use it since longer.
And I am not even speaking of games.

And what’s bothering you with the fact that people maybe don’t have the more optimized setup regarding files size management ?

I work as an IT Technician for a school. The amount of people who can’t download an app because they ran out of storage makes me think people keep everything on their phones. They probably ran out of cloud storage too. Some don’t even have PCs or laptops, just phones or tablets, and the idea of expandable storage or external drives for their phones is foreign to them.

Would also probably lose all of their data if the phone was lost, stolen, or would just break. A proper data storage and backup strategy is important.

I travel to rural areas with poor coverage regularly and thus cant always load my photos, videos, or music while visiting family. By making them all local with cloud backup, I don’t need to worry about my music or maps cutting out while driving. Or not being able to show my grandparents pictures and videos. Local storage is and always will be king for traveling.

I’m working on offloading from using my phone for music to an SD card in my car radio, but that’s going to take time and money to build up an offline collection that large, and would also require carrying an extra DAP when traveling for use outside the car. A phone being a swiss army knife is perfect for this, I can use a dongle DAC from Fiio, iFi, or any other brand and run balanced audio from my phone.

@Lukas @ImTooPhaT @mangomango @Rasta Probably better keep this topic on track i.e. what title and the poll is about?

Data storage / backup is a hot topic (as usual) that deserves a separate thread.

If I may ask, what desktop OS are you using and were the biggest challenges switching from iOS to Graphene OS?

I have a MacBook Air M1. Currently, and for the past few months, I have been using Linux, more specifically Asahi Ubuntu with Gnome.

The biggest challenge in switching from iOS to Graphene OS was just the banking apps. Some trial and error was needed for them to work properly.

Everything else had already been taken care of by me, as I was no longer using any services that depended on Apple.

Appreciate the reply!

I’m a long time iOS/macOS user thinking to move to GOS/Linux - but among other things, I run my own business and work with a lot of Apple users so the interoperability makes things so smooth.

Guess it’s one of those things I just gotta test run and see how it works for my specific use case!
