What domain registrar do you use?

I second Hover; I initially looked at Porkbun because of wide praise for it and its competitive pricing.

But I immediately found that I couldn’t continue past signing up, without uploading my ID. As I recall, I wasn’t using a VPN, TOR, or anything of the like. But I assume they classify the region I live in to be of ‘higher risk’.

Upon confirming with their support that there is no way around ID verification, I immediately dipped and requested account deletion. There’s no way I’m risking my ID getting leaked from using whichever 3rd party ID verification service they employ; I would not like to make myself an easier target for identity fraud than I strictly have to.

After hunting around a bit, Hover was the only ‘major’ provider I found which doesn’t require ID verification. So, even though prices are a decent bit higher, I went with them; I have no regrets so far.

The only issue I encountered in recent memory was the discovery that their provided authoritative nameservers aren’t DNSSEC capable. But that’s not a huge deal — I just switched to deSEC, a seemingly reputable nonprofit, for my nameservers.

On that note, deSEC supports the whole suite of DNSSEC related records like TLSA, OPENPGPKEY, and SSHFP. That’s pretty neat. They also have a HTTP API (GET, PUT, PATCH requests) which is nice for scripting DNS record changes. Furthermore, one email and you get your deSEC domain limit raised to 15, no questions asked. I’ll recommend deSEC quite highly.

Reddit threads report being asked to ID verify for Cloudflare but it seems rare. I would not use them out of principle if they ever ask for it, but realistically they might be a good option.

I use a registrar from the same company that manages the TLD, so I only have to give my information to one company instead of two.
