I’m seeking domain name registrars that accept prepaid credit cards and do not require multi-factor authentication (MFA) for logging in. This is important to me because losing access to a second factor, such as email, can occur, because providers may unexpectedly lock users out. In those situations, domain sellers often request ID to verify ownership, which I prefer to avoid. I’m looking for registrars that either do not require MFA or use anonymous second factors, like passkeys or one-time login codes that I can save. Any options that rely on email or phone numbers as a second factor won’t be suitable.
Many registrar actually doesn’t use the usual email address and password login flow, some use username and password instead. Porkbun.com spaceship.com dynadot.com namecheap.com to name a few.
You can’t really avoid registrar asking for identity proof since thats how domain ownership works, to register the domain under your own name. Icann required domain registrant to give full identity details when registering the domain and for registrar to verify it by asking for kyc proof. The registrar will do it randomly, they might ask for it or they might not. Technically you can lie but if they ask for passport copy, identity card copy and see the details doesn’t tally then the domain will be suspended. Now you’ll lose access to your banks, facebook, pg forum accounts, whatever accounts linked to email on the domain etc. Theres no full privacy nor anonymity in domain ownership to begin with, its for full ownership and portability.
That being said, whois record are mostly hidden from the general public anyways so theres still some anonymity there. Only 3 party will have your details; the registrar, registry and icann. You’d still be mostly private and anon from the general public.
I’ve been using njal.la for years without issue. They are however 2x+ the price of most other registrars.
You can use both email or XMPP to signup.
