How to choose and trust a domain registrar? Recommendations?

This seems like a very messy area, with several related posts here but nothing solid. I don’t know why but they all seem kind of dodgy.

Besides offering WHOIS redaction, the most important thing for me is that I can trust the company won’t accidentally leak my personal information, or perhaps intentionally share it, sell it, or be hacked.

I think an EU based company would be ideal because of GDPR. And ideally something which isn’t “Big Tech” (Cloudflare?).

I was almost sold on Trustname which has been recommended a lot here for being a privacy-focused registrar, until I realized it was the same person repeatedly mentioning it here and who is likely affiliated.

I think TrustName is a honeypot otherwise look into other recommendations.

Personally I use orange website mostly because it’s in Iceland and it doesn’t have an affiliate program

First you should consider which TLD you want to go after

I’m not too sure what’s up with the links you attached… it is more of that “Trustname is bulletproof” nonsense.

That trustname is shady af, loads of phishing domain registered there. They got first breach notice from icann back in june ICANN sends breach notice to TrustName - Domain Name Wire | Domain Name News and now just got final nail in the coffin, icann yanked their accreditation https://www.icann.org/uploads/compliance_notice/attachment/1367/hedlund-to-nestsiarovich-27aug26.pdf effective 15 days from now.

Searching this forum, its just 1 person repeatedly mentioning that registrar so highly likely a shill thats affiliated with them. Be careful out there with those so-called “bulletproof” anything.
