Again thanks for your efforts but respectfully I like to do my own research after taking other’s opinions. I am not a person who blindly follow other ‘trust me bro’ guys.
So why do you want our thoughts about iCloud Photos? Do your own research and choose accordingly. If you are interested in choice validation you will not find much of that towards iCloud.
It is the thoughts of most of us that you would be better off with Ente rather than iCloud.
By any chance, were you already decided and merely want the community to agree with your decision?
You asked for opinion on icloud, the community answered and you did not like what you’ve read.
So what is it going to be? Maybe mark the thread as solved?
I am not here for choice validation. I just wanted to know general opinions of community on the iCloud Photos backup with advanced protection enabled. I have already read about stingle and ente from the PG page. I never asker for recommendation, just opinions. Ofc I will do my own research but knowing other peoples opinion is also a part of research. Look at top replies, no one said anything about icloud instead of everyone just spammed ente.
The PG team and community have already done complete research on them, that’s why both of their products are recommended on Privacy Guides site.
This is true. But PG isn’t infallible. I see no reason whatsoever to distrust ente, but I also don’t think we should be inflating the infallibility of PG recommendations. The recommendations are quite good, and the process is pretty robust and transparent. But there is always some inherent risk in any recommendation, particularly with newer, smaller, companies. Again I see zero reason to distrust ente. Just standing up for @anon72334231’s right to weigh other options and not accept PG recc’s uncritically. PG recc’s are usally good well reasoned general recommendations but they will not be equally applicable to every threat model or personal situation.
Personally I agree with all your critiques here:
iCloud Photos is a completely proprietary service that requires a lot of trust in Apple, isn’t even cross-platform, and their E2EE doesn’t encrypt a lot of metadata.
But I’d also argue that @anon72334231 is already inevitably placing that trust in Apple already (by using their hardware + software), trusting Apple for E2EE cloud sync requires a bit more trust, but not a huge amount more than they are already placing in Apple.
Metadata is a valid concern. I do not personally know what metadata Ente or ADP protect. GPS and biometric info seems like the most importnat to protect. But there are valid reasons not to encrypt metadata, and to do checksums, PG explicitly reccomends some services that have made the conscious decision not to encrypt metadata (for valid reasons), for example Protonmail.
Nope, I wasn’t decided. Just wanted an opinion but the thread has went on to a different way. When I said I don’t currently want to use ente and require some research on my part, I believe you are capable enough to understand their replies.
Yeah I’ll marked it as complete. I think from now on I will be better off asking such questions on reddit or some AI tool.
Finally someone understood what I want to say. I am not undermining PG teams or communities work. Infact I appreciate a lot of the information you guys provide which is invaluable to many.
But Literally forcing your recommendations on someone and discouraging them do research on their part is something that everyone of us (including me) should not do.
With everyone’s logic here: If Google says that chrome is best web browser and is private (you know they say that), would you not then accept their word? Considering they are even a bigger company than PG ? No you do your research and choose a browser for your usecase.
Take everyone opinions but Don’t follow anyone’s words blindly, do your own research.
PS: Don’t forget you guys recommended Skiff too in the past. Your recommendations despite robust methods are still fallable
Skiff was a good product until the CEO sold out to Notion. But the privacy and security of the users wasn’t compromised. They just got a deadline before they have to switch to something else.
Some links that might be useful:
- Techlore Talk on Apple ADP (youtube link, my piped instance of choice is down right now)
- Techlore Forum Post on Ente, Ente CEO participates
- AMA with Ente CEO (reddit link)
- I recall a podcast where ente’s cofounder was interviewed, but I can’t find it, or recall which podcast he was on. Sorry.
Google saying that their own browser is the best is an obvious conflict of interest. It would also be very easy to debunk that claim.
Privacy Guides isn’t sponsored by anyone, and there is zero conflict of interest. Ente Photos meets both general and Photo Management criteria, which can be verified very easily.
Yeah but despite everyone saying to switch to skiff, I was always with proton as skiff was pretty new company. But yeah it was short lived.
Thanks, I will check out these links
Of course we don’t, since—for example—this forum exists.
I’ve also written some thoughts about the security of Advanced Data Protection elsewhere on this forum which haven’t changed. I’d link but it’s 2 AM and I’m on my phone, but you could probably search for it pretty easily if you’re interested.
If you’re with Proton, then why not use their Photos feature in Proton Drive?
I know friend, I was just giving an analogy of how it felt to me with those replies. Nothing against the PG team.
There is no such Photos feature in Proton Drive for iOS, unfortunately.
That’s unfortunate.
I think they only give 1GB with free tier right? Hmm I have to check their plans, since their pricing is in usd or euro? Little too pricy last I checked. I will check again.
I pay 5€/month for Proton Unlimited.
I will search for it later on as it’s late now. Thanks for your efforts for this community!
