I currently am in the Apple ecosystem, but have steadily started transferring to privacy and security-based providers for nearly everything. One thing I would like knowledge on is what to use for photo storage that is not iCloud storage. I know Apple makes this very convenient, but I was wondering what the risk is to using iCloud and what other options are convenient and available.

The main think with iCloud is Apple has the decryption keys unless you enable Advanced Data Protection. If you do that I’d say it’s a perfectly good option.

Proton Drive is also actively working on mobile photo backups, it might be worth waiting for them to finish that if you are in the Proton ecosystem.
