What do you think about these alternatives?

Is it just me who thinks that this list is a joke and could be a lot better?

LineageOS instead of GrapheneOS :person_facepalming:

I would do these instead:

  1. Google Meet/Zoom → Proton Meet or Signal

  2. Google Search → Kagi, Brave Search, DDG

  3. Google Photos → Ente

  4. Google Ecosystem → Proton (if walled garden and cost savings are preferred)

  5. Messaging Apps → Signal

  6. Play Store → Obtanium, Aurora Store, F-Droid (if you are okay with trusting an established third party but a third party nonetheless when it comes to verifying the integrity of all apps within)

  7. iOS/Android → GrapheneOS (this is a no brainer, not sure why the the screenshot doesn’t say this)

  8. Windows → Mac or Desktop Linux (Fedora Workstation) with full disk encryption (LUKS) enabled.

  9. Google Chrome → Brave, FF, Mullvad Browser & Tor (for select use cases)

  10. Streaming → Jellyfin

Mostly good enough of a list tho, maybe not fully up to date/etc but pretty good if it comes from a government haha.

  • I’m not sure using a semi-proprietary platform like BlueSky is the way to go, but big thumbs for Masto yes
  • ReVanced, I used some time ago I think but definitely not fully aware of what it is, looks like root/custom scripts?
  • Is Stremio a half-baked Jellyfin that is half-proprietary and borderline legal?
  • sad no mention of Signal
  • Droid-ify? What even is that??
  • sad for Lineage indeed :joy:
  • Linux yes, skip the mint out of it :herb:

The rest is actually quite some nice advice yes!

I currently would not recommend using Firefox with the default arkenfox, since FPP is pretty broken upstream.

Thanks for sharing. I did not know this.

Client for repos like IzzyOnDroid, F-Droid and more

Yes! „Stable“ distros tend indeed to be outdatet…

Big nothing-burger :hamburger: if privacytools.io
I’m surprised there is no affiliated link with Raid shadow legends down there.

Yes I saw your post passing by but didn’t go the time to investigate more into the topic. :+1:t2:

I never truly understood why people go through middlemen rather than pick from the source (Github/Lab/else) directly.

I distro-hopped a lot back in my days yet never on Mint.
Never saw the appeal of that one.
Looks like Windows was the selling argument?
I’m trying to move away from Windows here, I don’t want something that looks the same. :-1:t2:

Is there an issue on GitHub/bugzilla/whatever about this? If so, would you mind sharing it?

(upstream as in… arkenfox? or upstream as in firefox?)

(I’m also guessing FPP is FingerPrinting Protection or similar?)

This has been fixed in both LibreWolf and IronFox. Still waiting to get a response for my report.

Sometimes it’s nice to have a middleman like F-Droid.

The IzzyOnDroid repository pulls builds directly from code forges (GitHub, GitLab, etc.) and is the next best thing to the developers’ own repositories.

Precisely my point, just use the best thing. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

But @null made a decent point above, there is indeed a matter of build checks in the CI that could add some security I guess. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

Some folks aren’t looking for a new experience or to learn a new system. I recently transferred over a family member in their mid 70s, with the goal being to keep the user experience as similar as possible.

Still didn’t go with hideous Mint though, KDE Neon has worked great.

I myself helped some elderly people migrate away from Windows to Fedora 15 years ago. They enjoyed the new environment quite much more.

Main goal was to revive a dying struggling old computer with a second breath but it achieved far more while being free and open source.

My point is that you shouldn’t try to bend Linux to behave like Windows. It is a different OS just accept the change. :face_savoring_food:

Some people also like to morph their Linux so that it looks like MacOS. I real mystery to me. :joy:

But hey, doesn’t matter that much and Linux is plenty flexible to accommodate everybody’s use cases/wishes so it’s a win-win. :+1:t2:
