What do you think about these alternatives?

How is macOS better for digital independence? It’s still considered to be big tech.

I know you didn’t ask me but hope I can add some context.

Can you use a Mac like you’d expect to use any other Linux computer? In my view, yes - because Apple doesn’t make you sign into everything and you can use it without signing into anything if you wanted to.

This way, macOS is indeed better for all that it still offers and seeing how long they are usually supported on the hardware you already own or will own if you’re buying new.

Apple is big tech but it is not as plagued by enshittification and data privacy concerns as Microsoft. In comparison, it clearly respects its users a lot more and that’s enough for me.

Maybe not everything but some things. There are ways to use it without signing in but the core assumption is that you will. They also try to collect data at the point of sale and when you order from them directly.

Most older Mac products only get support from Linux developers now.

You are making a relative comparison. Apple is less bad than Microsoft. That isn’t saying much.

Yeah definitely a massive oversight there! Maybe this thing was made before GOS is the only thing I can think to possibly justify someone not even listing Graphene on this list.

I’ve yet to see any police or government agency complain about Lineage. When those agencies start complaining because they cannot get data off devices or off an app. That’s the real tip of the hat to anyone who hasn’t caught on yet that things are being done properly. That’s a real world audit that should say something.

For what they charge for their devices, their privacy should be much better.

You don’t have to sign into anything to use Windows either. The difference between Apple and Microsoft is relatively small these days. Nobody can be assured that they’re truly private using macOS.

I agree!

  • As a Mint user (I know, I know, not recommended, whatever) saying it’s THE alternative to both Windows and MacOS is sort of foolish. Just say “Linux” rather than list out 3 or 5 solid starting points. If I used MacOS every day, Mint’s very WIndows-ish feel would not entice me one bit.
  • Ecosia? Startpage, Qwant, Brave Search, and DDG are all right there
  • Nextcloud - sure, but could also add Proton Docs.
  • Streaming services….just don’t. Surprisingly, people care WHAT they watch, not just how they watch it.

?
Stremio is a very solid alternative to streaming services, in fact it brings an experience closer to them with the freedom of streaming, thats really it.

also I agree, id tell long time windows users to install zorin os over linux mint for their beginning

I also thought

Nextcloud, proton drive, docs and sheets yeah solid recommendations

I woild change LineageOS to GrapheneOS and you’re looking at an overall solid recommendation.

But not all add-ons are there to cover all streaming services. My household cycles through several, one at a time until we run through their good stuff, then cancel. I’m seeing a few missing - Peacock, for one.

Also, correct me if I’m wrong, but isn’t Streamio just a fancy frontend? I already need the service and I’m using the API? Which is fine, but it’s not an alternative, then. it’s the same thing with more privacy layers.

An alternative wold be just saying “sailing the high seas” and leaving it at that.

there are addons to cover all streaming services so you’re wrong on that (TMDB also exists which is what kodi uses to fetch show information)
also stremio is not exactly just a frontend, even if so it is the best kind of frontend than many high sea sites out there.

also I clearly did not emphasize with you on “with the fhe freedom of streaming” haven’t I? but unfortunately due to no piracy policy, I can’t say anything here beyond this point, try actively interpreting what that means.

Look I was at that mindset with you at first, but when I actually actively tried it after when one of the signal friends guided and recommended me, You start to realize stremio does the best of both worlds, whenever your high sailing in the seas or not.

In fact i would argue stremio can make streaming more accessible than inaccessible, for example let’s say you wanna watch Umamusume: Cinderella Gray [JP Audio, ENG Subs but obviously no GR Subs] (Did not watch all the episodes but it is definitely jam packed with cute, comedic and action moments and if interested in horse racing based on real events, give it a try) with a friend, your friend only understands greek/native language and they’re not good with english or don’t understand it (or maybe replace that friend with some family member, besides the point), with an addon like subsmaker im able to utilize the google gemini api (High parameter Gemma or Gemini flash models) to take advantage of LLM Translation in say english subtitles where you would normally read, boom now you and that friend/family can now enjoy a show in a language you both understand, no need for the dread of not finding or not having that subtitle in that language. I don’t see that in “legal” streaming services like Netflix or Amazon Prime

GrapheneOS existed since 2014 History | GrapheneOS

OK, so I’m not knocking Streamio. I am pushing back that it’s not exactly a reasonable “replacement” for individual streaming services for the average person.

But this is like saying Freetube or PipePipe are alternatives to YT. They’re not, and for how often Invidious breaks, I’ve never once had as single Invidious backend work in an alt frontend for more than a day. Even through an Invidious site, it’s a pain sometimes to spend 10 minutes getting a 2 minute video to load.

FWIW, I also don’t consider PeerTube a good replacement for YT either. Find me a video on Peertube that shows my mom how to install Streamio on a Fire Stick. I sure can’t find one (to be fair, I can’t find one on any of the many other video hosting sites out there, either).

Considering that on Linux to install Streamio I’m already running into dependencies to fix before I even install….really? And I’m going to put my passwords for things I pay for into this?

Also, in terms of ease of use for people using a smart TV (ugh) or device like a Fire Stick, there’s not huge gains over taking the time to set up a paid streaming service in there when you just want to watch something on a regular ol’ streaming service.

So it’s more about what do we mean by “replacement”? There’s quite a few good 1:1 replacements on this list. When it comes to content-heavy services, that’s a much higher bar because if I want to watch a particular movie or show, my options are either paying for it (and I’m happy to pay for content, actually, just not watch ads) or “find” it. As someone that has been dinged legally several times for “helping people find things” online, there’s actual risk there that people should understand in that. It’s not all free videos with no consequences.

You misunderstand

Stremio does not need your Netflix password nor even an account. Also it doesn’t have stremio specific things or exclusive like other “legal” platforms do

it is basically about streaming things the way you like

Again I can’t go any further than this before involving piracy.

anything related to this I have to message you

I did some research. It looks like Stremio addons can aggregate Netflix shows but not play them. Is this correct? You shouldn’t represent it as a way to watch Netflix content if it can’t stream DRM media from a Netflix server. If it plays ‘DRM free’ Netflix content that is a different story.

yes but I never said it plays just netflix or content from netflix with your netflix accout

When I say “Freedom to stream”, it means that basically it is not anything exclusive or specific, search the show here you will find it

whats not allowed to discuss here doe is how do we/you stream it, it also avoids liability for both us and Privacy Guides in the potential copyright holders argue that “See, you indirectly encouraged piracy” type of argument or stremio getting the reputation that it is one (well it kinda is but there’s a reason they themselves avoid making any mention too).

This is why I encourage trying it like I did, you usually can’t understand it from just words and especially when forbidden to discuss piracy but at that.

I also tried to basically justify why it is a recommendation here, it is not an unnecessary here, sure it is not a streaming service itself but it basically breaks the shackle of the doomed, effed up industry that is the TV/Movie Streaming Industry while having a similar experience

If discussing how to pirate media isn’t allowed then please stop alluding to it. Keep the discussion to legal features of legally obtained software. Pirates can go elsewhere for advice. I’m going to install the APK to check it out. Kodi didn’t work for me and I’m planning to dust off my TV and use my tablet as a media player.

As I said I was just trying to say why I think the recommendation is well justified, refer to my last edited line.

Also basically, how you do it is your responsibility, not us, thats really i

Yes we understand you are passionate about liberated media but the doublespeak is confusing.

Like everyone else has mentioned, it definitely needs signal, grapheneos, and I feel like Tor could be added as a browser option.
