Unhappy with Bitwarden: Should I switch to another password manager, and which option is viable?

I get the point about it not being available for ios, but as far as being more time consuming, yeah sure you have to set it up once, but afterwards it works pretty much the same for me.

Sycthing for Android does have to use a 3rd party app, but it’s also open source and the database is encrypted anyway so I don’t really see why you couldn’t use any cloud service honestly.

Also, losing all of your devices simultaneously seems a bit of a stretch to me. I’ve personally never seen that happen to anyone. I could be wrong, but if the person is using ios, isn’t their database backed up to icloud anyway?

It’s very unlikely but also very much within the realm of possibility. Robberies, fires, natural disasters, and other unexpected events can happen. While they usually won’t result in the destruction of every device you own (assuming you own multiple, which some people don’t), I wouldn’t be comfortable betting my entire digital life on that.

Services which require PII may be recoverable afterwards, but most people in this community tend to stick to anonymous/pseudonymous services which cannot be recovered if you lose your credentials. Total failure of your devices truly means a total irrecoverable loss of your digital life.

I haven’t used iOS in a while but if I recall correctly, I believe that’s opt-in? Either way you’d need to remember the password to your iCloud account which most users may not if they’re using a password manager. With a cloud-based password manager, the master password is also used to authenticate your access to their service.

My issue with Proton Pass is they don’t support folders.

This is a valid criticism.

Why did you get locked out of your Proton account?

Even though I only use it for aliases, by default, my recommendation to anyone who needs a PW manager would be Proton Pass. My second would have probably been BitWarden, but at this point, I don’t know if that’s still a good choice.

The reason for these recommendations is because, both Proton Pass and BitWarden are open sourced, and have rich free versions that can let people determine if it’s the good choice for them. I would hope that that is still the case.

If one was going to pay for a password manager, and was willing to spend $36, I would tell them to either go for Proton Pass or 1Password. Yes, I know the latter is not open sourced and has its own issues but IMO, they still have the best UI & UX.

I would also warn any paying Proton Pass users of its shortcomings, like the fact that Proton doesn’t allow more than 1 alias per third party website. That means that if you have 2 Instagram accounts, you can only use a Proton/SimpleLogin alias for one of them.

Interesting. Didn’t know that as I’ve never used Proton Pass. I don’t think I could manage without folders. It seems odd to me that they wouldn’t support that.

I use Keepass and just recently started syncing it with Syncthing. Before, I would just merge my databases using Kde Connect

@Overeager8050 Proton Pass is the answer here. Go for it
