The tools page has a few issues that need to be addressed. Firstly, the “Top 3 VPN” thing doesn’t make sense when there are only 3 recommendations anyway. It should just say “Private VPNs.” Removing that would make the site look less like an ai generated SEO spam site as well.
It also shouldn’t say “Read Full Review” because it’s not a review, it’s an overview with configuration recommendations.
The threat model label warning is confusing since there’s no threat model labels on the tools page. Either they should be added to the buttons or this warning should be removed.
To me it feels clear that they are things you will encounter on other pages based on the text, but at the very least I do want to give those icons hover text so it is more obvious what the icons themselves are. Been thinking about that since the info box was added.
The way I interpret this, the site is saying that these are the top 3 VPNs in general, not merely the top 3 on the site. Obviously the 3 we recommend are the top 3 VPNs overall, because if there was anything better out there we’d recommend that instead.
I’ll be interested to see what people think about this proposal, but I would caution against making these changes. What you are talking about reverting are changes that were made ~1 month ago, which can be a bit disruptive to go back and forth so quickly. I don’t need anything on the site to be set in stone, but it is real work for the translators to redo, etc.
Personally I also don’t really consider headlines to be as editorially important as actual content, so I don’t see this making a major impact myself.
Also there’s a PR to add windscribe, so when that gets added it’ll be “Top 4 VPNs” and then “Top 3 Mail” which doesn’t look good at all. It also implies that they’re in order of quality which isn’t the case. I know it’s work for the translators but it’s only a few words difference. In fact it shouldn’t be much work at all since it’s only removing text.
There isn’t an approved Windscribe topic or open PR at the moment, so I would not count on that happening anytime soon necessarily. It’s not a product I’d recommend currently.
Realistically if we add a fourth VPN provider or email provider we’d have to update headings and text all across the site at that time anyways, so it makes more sense to me to make those changes if that happens at that time rather than preemptively.
