It was really interesting to test out UT, get to know the community and learn about things like Libertine and Waydroid. There is still a way to go before UT can be recommended to regular users, but I really hope this project continues to grow and be successful!
While I have not been able to compare this to regular Android or GrapheneOS on a Pixel 3A, the battery seemed to run out quite quickly. When I left the phone in sleep mode without any apps active, the battery ran out in two to three days.
I’m curious about this if you’re able to test it, since the 3A is quite old now and it could just come down to general battery health. I do have to say, 2-3 days standby seems typical for any Android phone I’ve ever used though…
I’ve been meaning to install UT again for a while, so it’s an interesting read.
Yeah, maybe it’s normal. I never leave my smartphone alone for 3 days normally!
Kernel version on the device is 4.9.124.

There is also Makefile · halium-12.0 · UBports / Porting / Community Ports / android12 / Google Pixel 3a / Kernel Google Sargo · GitLab

Also a reminder that UBports uses Halium on most devices, like sargo, which still relies on many of the proprietary and outdated/insecure Android blobs from stock.

I personally tested Ubuntu Touch on a barely supported, and it s*cks. With all respect to the developer, having an OS that both doesn’t natively support Linux apps AND Android apps is mindboggling. What’s the point of a Linux phone then?
Yes, there is a compatibitly layer for Linux apps, but it didn’t work (again, not the best phone to test it).
This is compared with Postmarket OS, where apps ran smoothly, but all connections didn’t work.I didn’t manage to make even wired Ethernet=>USBC work.
I might try Postmarket OS on the Pixel next.
I highly recommend it. You
can even use the UBPorts installer to install PostMarket OS (for supported devices, which the 3A is). It shines by the pure Linux experience, which has its downsides but feels quite good. I personally recommend Posh as a DE.
How generous of them!
I imagine you’ll be releasing a write up on this too? Please do. I hope it’s your next post soon enough as the juxtaposition between the two would be an interesting evaluation.
Thank you!
I only see something called ‘Droidian’ as the other OS option.
I had a look, but it appears PostMarketOS isn’t fully optimised for the Pixel 3A: Google Pixel 3a XL (google-bonito) - postmarketOS Wiki
I am going to try Droidian next: Droidian devices
I see. Yeah maybe not all devices have the option. You can also use pmbootstrap, the postmarket OS. If all goes well, it’s just a couple of command to copy-paste.
Good luck with Droidian.
I tested it on Droidian with the same result, so I’ve deleted that paragraph from the post. Thanks for raising it.
