The only sane Android alternative is iOS.

Are you sure ?

Yes.

Why are you looking for an alternative?
Graphene OS is top-notch.

Linux phones are becoming usable as they now can run (via emulation I think) Android apps.

But security-wise it’s much worse than Android.

Android is a platform. iOS is a product.

An alternative for Android would be something like SailfishOS, TizenOS, etc?

Is there a reason why you might seek Android alternatives?

Linux mobile distros are not as secure as something like Graphene OS. But if there is a more philosophical or ideological reasoning behind this, please let us know.

Oh boy, you’ll struggle with third-party software, like Android apps on Linux. You can use emulation, of course, but that could be pretty unpractical.

I think you should get a GrapheneOS device if you need to use Android apps, like WhatsApp. I never used a Linux phone but I think those could require some figuring out if you wanna make things work.

Isn’t iOS also a platform as well in the sense that it provides a framework for developers to create applications?

I would agree with @Lukas here:

SailfishOS and Tizen isnt fully open source and iOS isnt open source and I see little functional difference with Trusting. I hate Apple but I know what will happen with them involved. Mobile OS devs are arent inherently sketchy but less devs and technical debt is sketchier.

The app ecosystem isnt there at all.

I fully support Linux mobile but at this point, Linux phone alternatives is a dev platform more than anything. It is still a meme. Not daily driver worthy unless you are willing to spend time with it like a vet tending to a sick dying puppy.

Ubuntu Touch is usable, though I don’t feel like using Linux if all I’m going to do is emulating Android anyway.

so I choose PostmarketOS and Ubuntu Touch

We are both having what’s called a … semantic discord?

Yes, iOS is a “platform” for app developers. No, iOS isn’t a platform for OEMs to build on top off, not even like Windows. That is a significant difference, in my eyes, and so, I’d not consider iOS an “Android alternative” in that context.

That said, I get your point about iDevices being an “alternative” to Android devices.

The OS developers are aware, I imagine. Not sure how good Android emulation is on these OSes, but that’s one avenue.

This is overblown. Android is still open source, it is just that the source code will only be updated every major release (QPR I think) instead of having a public git where you can see all the commits in real-time.

See Exclusive: Google will develop the Android OS fully in private, and here’s why

yes. :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

This is the clarification I was seeking as originally I did not understand your disagreement to @Lukas statement. Thanks!
