The NexPhone: A $549 Android, Linux, and Windows Device

Nex Computer is best known for their dock that allows you to turn your Android phone into a workstation. But now, 14 years after initially announcing the concept, they are accepting preorders for the NexPhone.

Sounds really cool, but I’m gonna stick with GrapheneOS and wait until desktop mode + Linux terminal becomes usable. Some people say it already is, but i haven’t tried it out personally yet. Theoretically, you could run a desktop environment using the Linux terminal in GrapheneOS. Combine that with desktop mode and you have a secure phone that can turn into a Linux desktop that is sandboxed from your phone.

I’ll keep this on my radar though.

I haven’t been excited for a phone for maybe over a decade, and suddenly there are 3 upcoming phones I’m looking forward to. The two other phones are Clicks Communicator and Sidephone. Realistically though, I’ll probably end up sticking with my Pixel-Graphene as I’m expecting some major drawback with all 3 of these projects.

I like the idea of getting a NexPhone and ditching my laptop though, especially since I’m a pretty basic user as all I really need are a web browser, an office suite, and a media player. I’ll be following this one closely.

For me, windows is huge red flag :triangular_flag:

Look:
1.Price of this hardware will be increased only because of windows licence
2.Windows is shady, many time broke other (dual boot) systems, proprietary + attack vector. Where the guarantee, that it won’t be hacked and then all other systems?
3.Linux + Android is enough. Linux support QEMU, so freaks who need native windows can go with VM, which prevent something like WANNACRY from happening (and it is huge problem, since from the description all systems have access to all files), but there is also Wine, so…
4.Microsoft will track you through systems, not only on one
