Fairphone 4 OS recomendation

Hi all,
I’d like to know which OS you recommend for a Fairphone 4. I’m currently a DivestOS user, so I’m looking for an alternative.

probably just Lineage really~okay i forgor that Calyx exists :skull: (which will also have a newer OS than stock, lol.), since the other main option would be /e/OS which is a meme

Source???

Stock OS
LOS
iodeOS
/e/OS

this comparison which shows that Lineage also isn’t amazing and also other discussions about it on this forum in the past

CalyxOS.

I’d probably pick Calyx over Lineage and I’d pick Lineage over ADB deGoogled Stock.

I havent looked into the rest of the alternatives. At least I have heard of /e/ (funny name, reminds me of Pop!_OS). iodeOS is the newest I’ve heard.

Everything about it is a meme, but scroll to the updates section to experience the highest caliber of cringe.

I’m surprised /e/OS is considered an option at all. I guess it’s just marketing hype from YouTubers and stuff… Like Lineage and Calyx existing just invalidates it completely

It really shouldn’t be, and nor should iodéOS. Both take unacceptably long to ship security updates. LineageOS and CalyxOS are at least slightly better in this regard.

(and also that /e/ and iode both allow signature spoofing for ALL packages while Calyx and Lineage only allow for Google’s)

Honestly I don’t think there is much evidence that any of these Android-based operating systems, outside of GrapheneOS, are more then a slight privacy improvement over stock. Worse yet, they can be a significant step back in terms of security.

Considering this I would just recommend installing one, daily drive it for a week or two and, then try another one for a week or two.

Its not clear any of these options would provide a clear benefit over the other, unless there is a particular niche threat model to cater to, you may as well test drive them and pick which one suits you.

Calling it a meme is a bit strong. I already met them and they are nice people and it’s nice that they work to make a ready-to-go smartphone.

There is nothing nice in reselling insecure and/or marked-up devices running an insecure OS.

Unfortunately being ‘nice’ doesn’t really qualify them to make good stuff. I mean a lot of my friends would consider me a nice person, but I don’t think I would make a good operating system.

I also want to mention that the leadership is questionable. Claiming sustainability while selling an EOL chip in their custom Murena 2, the CEO using AI generated images when the post could just not have any images (again, if you’re really for sustainability, you should just not include one?). Or him thinking thatTelegram is somehow a private messaging platform

Anywho, I just don’t think they’re very competent? They might have a nice community, but the operating system isn’t great and the leadership is questionable.

Thanks for your feedback. At the end I’ve opted for CalyxOS.

When someone resells dangerously insecure phones with insecure hardware, they are not nice people. They are malicious and dishonest. Stay away from them at all costs.

You are making a huge mistake. You should trash your current phone and buy a new Google Pixel or iPhone. If you buy the former, use either the stock OS or GrapheneOS.

Lol you guys are just repeating what GOS says. e/OS might not be as secure as GOS, but it’s not insecure. Also totally out of subject to talk about GOS on a fairphone thread, but yeah…
