Why did I get this discussion as a notification into my inbox along with a random passinbox alias?

Thank you for reporting.
The forum is configured to automatically notify people of new posts in Announcements, Announcements > Articles, and Announcements > Videos. Unfortunately it appeared to also notify people of every reply to those topics (like this one) as well.
This has now been updated/fixed, so that you will only receive notifications of the first posts for new announcements, and not the replies 
If you are logged in you’ll simply receive these notifications in the browser, but if you are away for some period of time then you may also receive email notifications about them.
If you want to stop being notified of announcements, even just the first posts, you will have to adjust your settings here to remove announcements from the “Watching First Post” categories: https://discuss.privacyguides.net/my/preferences/tracking

Can’t get it to work w/ Sharkey, might not be available outside of Mastodon perhaps?
Thanks, this post made me realize I hadn’t fully grasp what federation really meant, but this cleared things up for me.
