Software for managing local backups

What software for Windows (preferably FOSS, but doesn’t have to be) to use in order to manage backups on a local drives (external HDDs and SSDs)?

The most important features which are needed are:

  • The encryption of a whole drive or individual backup files.
  • Incremental backup.
  • GUI

I’ve been using Duplicati in the past, and even back then, it partially worked. Occasionally had some random issues while encrypting and also while doing a backup. Recently, I tried restoring a backup and it failed.

This led me to switch to VeraCrypt, but I’m missing incremental backup feature. It’s quite time consuming manually picking and copying data to unlocked VeraCrypt container or drive.

I came across Kopia, so wanted to check if someone use it here and what are your impressions? If there’s some other software which have the above features, please let me know.

Also, partially related to this thread, is there any suggestion for FOSS for finding duplicate files in directories? When I did backups with VeraCrypt, I definitely copied some files and folders multiple time.

Cryptomator is what I use. Works really well.

I use a Bitlocker encrypted HDD and Backup my data with Kopia. So far it worked really well for me.

Not FOSS but I can recommend Macrium which I am using for the last two years.

Does Cryptomator have incremental backups?

Is there any benefit encrypting it with Bitlocker, considering Kopia already can provide backup encryption? Or you prefer to have the whole drive encrypted?

Yes, and as much as I understand what incremental backups are - most backup solutions are such.

Not a backup tool

I haven’t used it on Windows, but on Linux it works well, via CLI, GUI and server.

I have the full drive encrypted with bitlocker because I also store other files on there.

Doesn’t mean you can’t use it as one.

Unless I’m missing something, I don’t think Cryptomator itself provides backup capabilities. Yes, one could use Cryptomator to encrypt backups from another tool that might not have encryption options, but I think OP is also asking for a tool to use to automate backups.

Indeed. If Cryptomator doesn’t have backup functionalities, it’s basically the same usecase as using Veracrypt right now.

I guess it works for delosmzp, but I’m looking to “automize” it.
