Simplewall (FOSS Windows firewall) is now archived (update, active again?)

I was just about to test it  , sad seeing it no longer being maintained, hopefully someone forks it and start maintaining it.

The only other FOSS Windows firewall that I’m aware of is Fort

Has anyone used Fort Firewall? If so can you speak to its reliability and trustworthyness?

I’ve been using SimpleWall on my Windows work PC for years. The only other alternative I know of is PortMaster, but when I tried it it was hard to use and buggy.

Behold, Portmaster - if you didn’t know about it. Recently acquired by IVPN.

Portmaster unfortunately it’s not really useful, quite slow, clunky and buggy.
It’s a shame because I found it was quite easy to use but especially using with a VPN was a pain.

I’m testing Fort in a VM, it’s seems nice for now but I have not digged enough.
Trustworthiness is hard to evaluate but it’s very actively developed since a few years now.

You have to disable core isolation to use it.

You can’t block by domain.

Yeah that’s unfortunate but I had it already disabled to use VirtualBox too…

Blocking by domain is no issue, I was only using SimpleWall to allow/disallow different apps access to the internet with an easy to use interface.

Core Isolation needing to be disabled is very strange … SimpleWall didn’t need that.

The search continues, I guess.

That’s because SimpleWall doesn’t have his own driver for the Windows Firewall Platform, you can find a comparison with other firewalls here

It looks like the project is alive again? An update was released last week.

Bruh this developer is very wild

you scared me for a moment, i thought it was fr archived haha guess it was for a month? :joy:

[Question] What’s the current status of the project?

Did you find a new firewall? In same boat rn

What about this?

This is not a firewall. It’s a system wide adblocker. Not exactly the same thing.

I’m still on Simplewall since it seems (?) to be alive again.

This is very different from a firewall, but thank you for sharing regardless. Their repo looks very nice.

I think UBlock origin with default filters is really powerful enough that doesn’t warrant another program running in background. Majority of ads come from web browser but if you need a system wide blocker, mullvad’s default DNS content blockers are more than enough.

Have you read through source code or are you just blindly trusting? Developer seems a little loopy…

I’m not a programmer so I’m not qualified to read through source code. I’m just trusting.
