Seeking Advice on Read-It-Later Tools: Pocket vs. Wallabag

I’m looking to elevate my “read it later” experience on Firefox and am considering switching from the traditional bookmark manager to either Firefox Pocket or Wallabag. I’ve heard good things about both, but I’m not sure which one would be the best fit for me.

Background:

  • Current Setup: I’ve been using the traditional bookmark manager in Firefox, but I find it lacking for temporary “read it later” items.
  • Privacy Concerns: I value privacy and control over my data, which is why I’m considering Wallabag. Open-source and end-to-end encryption (E2EE) are priorities for me.
  • Technical Skills: I’m not very knowledgeable about self-hosting and have never done it before. I also don’t have a server.
  • Mozilla and Pocket: I know Mozilla owns Pocket, but I’m not sure if that makes it trustworthy enough for my privacy needs.

Questions:

  1. Pocket vs. Wallabag:
  • How do you use Pocket and Wallabag in your daily workflow?
  • What are the pros and cons of each in terms of usability, features, and privacy?
  1. Self-Hosting Wallabag:
  • Given my lack of experience with self-hosting and not having a server, is Wallabag still worth considering?
  • Are there any hosted solutions for Wallabag that are privacy-focused and reliable?
  1. Alternatives:
  • Are there other read-it-later tools that integrate well with Firefox and offer a good balance of convenience and privacy?

I appreciate any insights or recommendations you can provide. I’m really looking to improve my productivity and organization when it comes to saving articles and links for later reading.

I like Wallabag. It’s FOSS, you can also self host if you want or you can pay a very reasonable yearly subscription.

This is the hosted one from the dev: wallabag.it - Read your articles later

I add the articles mostly through my phone I’d like to catch up later on - and I have subscribed to my own Wallabag through RSS so I get my read later list along with my news on my RSS feed.

This is a much simpler smoother set up if you ask me and I have tried other ways to go about it too.

This way, you also stay tech independent and you can use Wallabag on any device (and on the web too) and if you choose to do it my way, you can also use RSS on any device (depending on the reader of your choice).

Been a LONG Pocket user. Before Mozilla acquired them.

I load articles via Inoreader into my Pocket account. I read bits when I can - grocery store line, bus, between sets at the gym, etc.

If I’m out of podcasts to play on my phone, I’ll use Pocket’s reverse transcription service to listen to the articles.

Pocket is also implemented on my Kobo ereader. i can read articles on it’s nice, battery sipping e-ink screen.

On the web, I like it’s capability to change the font size and margins.

I’ll get a couple articles a week from their recommendation service that I’ll read. Out of maybe 6-7/day.
