Remove Yattee

Why should this tool be removed?

I never had a good experience while using Yattee. I tried it again today, and well, it wasn’t great like always.

There is no poimt in keeping relisting and removing frontends. It is a cat and mouse game.
Yattee is also the only option on f.x. AppleTV.

Yatee is indeed very unreliable. I still have it but I created a shortcut to DuckDuckGo in the Videos tab to play YT videos via Sapphire browser. Unfortunately some searches don’t return the expected video that I’m looking. So, sometimes I have to look for the URL of the video to open it in the video tab in the DuckDuckGo search. A bit not very convenient .

You can just use invidious/piped on safari/onion

Probably. But still far better than using Yattee…

None of YT alternative fronts should be used on onion… unless you have infinite patience ofc

Yattee’s not great. But neither are any of the other available options I am aware of on iOS (that don’t rely on self-hosting on some other device). This is one area where Android is much better.

Going to reopen this. Yattee is essentially broken and no longer available in the app store.

Here’s a statement from the app developer in case other community members haven’t read the other thread about Yattee:

@ph00lt0 @redoomed1 The link from privacyguides.org to Yattee also didn‘t worked for me, but I installed „TestFlight“ and could from there install Yattee. I have so far encountered no breakage at any time.

I might be wrong since I haven’t used youtube alternatives for months, but isn’t the problem not Yattee itself, but that Youtube is working hard to block 3rd party frontends like Invidious and Piped instances, and to keep instance running many public Invidious and Piped servers are now blocking api usage from them, which Yattee relied on?

I haven’t tried, but doesn’t Yattee still work when user self host Invidious or Piped server, and don’t block api usage from instance configurations?

Also, there is completely new version of Yattee on TestFlight, which says it has been rewritten huge chunks of code.
Although this won’t solve the issue that most public instances don’t seem allow api usage these days to limit usage and prevent triggering Youtube’s rate limit.

You are correct, most issues people have with Yattee have been due to unreliable public Invidious and Piped instances. For the last year or so I don’t think anyone has hosted a functional public instance with API access.

Exactly.

For those interested, the new rewrite of the app also came with a selfhostable API server powered by yt-dlp, so now Yattee is a media player not just for Youtube but the 1000+ other sites that yt-dlp supports. It also still supports Invidious, Piped and some other sources. You can find all the info in their new docs. The rewrite is also a big improvement in terms of UX in my opinion.

I’m not advocating for it to be re-added though at this point. The new version of the app is currently only accessible through TestFlight or by sideloading and only for iOS. MacOS and tvOS builds will come later.

Yeah i think that nails it a bit. Testflight is not something i feel good recommending to the general audience.
