Reddit with VPN - easy redirect?

Hi,
With reddit blocking connections from VPNs (at least, my VPN…), how do you handle this? Every now and then, there is a question I have that seems answered on reddit and I want to check it out. On desktop, the copy-paste to replace “reddit.com” with redlib isn’t too tedious, but on the phone, it’s a mess. Is it worth installing an extension just for this? Are there privacy downsides? which extension is ok (if not actually recommended)? or is there a work-around?
Case in point: grapheneos, mull
Thanks!

A simple refresh (F5) seems to “fix” it temporarily, at least from my personal experience being behind ProtonVPN.

Thanks. Not on my end, though.

I log in to my Reddit account. Afaik, the blocks are only for those not logged in.

When using Mullvad, I just change my location to Norway since it seems very few people access Reddit from those IPs which would explain why they haven’t been blocked yet. Wouldn’t be surprised if all this changed soon…

I find this consistently happening when I set it to my SEA home country (or neighbor country).

As with above suggestion maybe change VPN Country/City?

There is the LibRedirect browser extension that you could consider.

https://redlib.tux.pizza works

Try to use Lemmy as a reddit alternative more often.
These Frontends will soon all be blocked. It’s no real solution.

What about old.reddit? I know brave on iOS has an autoredirect option in tbe settings for that but not on android.

reddit.rtrace.io does also work.

That’s what I was about to say. You need to log into your account to see post. However, I have noticed that now, they won’t let you log in if you use a VPN. At least that’s been my experience. You’ll get an error message.

Don’t disable your VPN. Either try different locations, or use a free VPN browser extension, even if it’s just to log in. WindScribe and TunnelBear should work. Just don’t log in with your real IP. Don’t let them win.

Why would you use Reddit with a VPN? It is not like Reddit is banned in most countries.

Not all of us have Reddit accounts anymore.

We also need to minimize the data/metada we send to Reddit as well.

Neither of those are PG endorsed VPN providers. Use at your own risk.

Absolutely.

To be clear. I don’t pay for either of those VPN providers. But my own VPN provider is blocked by Reddit if I try to log in with it.

As far as I know, Proton VPN is the only free, trustworthy VPN in the privacy community. Unfortunately, it is also blocked by Reddit. I’m not going to pay for another VPN just so I can log into my account. And I assume OP wouldn’t either. I also don’t recommend logging into Reddit with your real IP, so to me this was the best solution.

Let’s suppose OP pays for Proton VPN, which is blocked by Reddit when trying to log in their account. If you want to mitigate the risks of Windscribe and Tunnelbear or any other browser extension VPN that may work, have Proton VPN enabled on your computer, and on top of that you install Windscribe or TunnelBear in your browser, and enable it. That way, you don’t expose your real IP to them, and you’re able to log into your Reddit account.

Once you’re logged in, you can disable or uninstall Windscribe/Tunnelbear.

It’s not about Reddit being banned. It’s about not wanting to share certain things about your real identity with Reddit, that includes one’s IP address.

Reddit is an amazing place to find community, but it’s also terrible for privacy. There are so many subs that I want to join or participate in, but I don’t because doing so would reveal something personal about myself.

Imagine you follow r/AustinTX, r/AskMen r/MentalHealth r/Democrats r/IndianAmericans and r/Christianity, r/CollegeLife.

With just those data points, Reddit can correctly assume so much about you. And that’s just from subs you follow, without even going through your posts and what you comment.

Protecting your real IP is just one layer of protection.

You don’t see the purpose of using a VPN on Reddit, but have you ever asked yourself why would Reddit block someone using a VPN?

Thanks for that, I wasn’t aware of its existence and this seems to work for me.

Sounds like a good idea. Besides, Reddit sucks very much. Its karma system totally ruins it.

I have a similar experience. I get to the login page but it’s protected with an unsolvable Google Captcha. The one where it doesn’t even let you do the audio challenge.
