Would there be any interest in like a group call, webinar-style livestream where we go through and set up a self-hosted VPN (with Outline VPN probably) together, and if you have issues you can message and we can figure it out and stuff, like a group project?
(Like basically I’ll install some self hosted software on a call/livestream and you can follow along at the same time if you want and ask questions live if you’re doing it yourself.)
And then also, are there topics you’d be interested in doing this with other than setting up a VPN?
I’m sure many people would be interested in that content. Personally, I really like Tailscale with an Exit Node configured as a personal VPN solution. It gets around all the nasty NAT and port forwarding issues that people are likely to face.

yes please. I’ve been begging for any self-hosting guide that is actualy step by step and for noobs. I know it’s simply not easy and I’m coming to accept that ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ but I want to keep trying
Id like to kno the proper way to setup for using Monero, on Laptop and on Graphene as well, if theres any interest, as I havent found a good beginners guide that doesnt assume knowledge of a few key terms, if i recall correctly. Re VPN, Im settling on Proton for now to give myself a break.

wWhile a self hosting video would be interesting, a lot of people have also asked for recommendations on things related to hosting itself. What’s VPS should we choose from? What domain registrar?
I think those who want to self host will learn how to self host, and there are tutorials ad nauseum about it. but what we don’t have are recommendations for self hosting with a VPS and registrar and how to set those up in the most privacy respecting manner - for yourself and ideally also for those accessing the server.
It’s somewhat interesting and I might watch the video after the fact. I’d like to see something (e.g. a brief presentation) on why a self-hosted VPN is a good idea.
I currently use Proton VPN, so right now I’m trusting Proton with my data. If I self-host from my own home then I am not trusting anyone but myself. However, the VPS seems like it would not buy me anything since the traffic still looks like it’s coming from my home. If I self-host from a VPS, then it seems like I’m shifting trust from Proton to the VPS provider. While I could see the source code for the VPN server, it seems to me that there’s no guarantee that’s the code that I’d be running on the VPS if the VPS provider isn’t trustworthy. I’m trying to understand why either of these options might be better than Proton. Am I missing something?
I love the idea of these community webinars. I always feel bad because I always seem to have a scheduling conflict, but especially if they’re recorded for future review, it would be great.
This may be way too rudimentary for everyone else, so feel free to disregard. But my biggest struggle at the moment as a developer getting into self hosting is coming up with and maintaining an update routine. It’s looking like trying to keep up with every update for every component is going to be a full time job in itself. It seems like there’s probably an established solution for this that I haven’t found yet.
I do self-hosting as a hobby so this type of content interests me. Not sure if I’m in need of a self-hosted VPN at the moment, but I might learn a few things in the livestream that enlighten me.
About the topics, I would say networking and security in self-hosting. I’m not a total noob, but this is what I struggle the most to understand and be sure of myself that I set up things correctly.
