Hey all-
I wanted to ask, for anyone who self-hosts: Is there anyone who uses XCP-ng & Xen Orchestra for their hypervisor? If so, I was wanting to know any thoughts or experiences that you had with it if you did use it. This is just a random question that I was just curious on asking.
Thanks!
Is there something that catches your eye over Proxmox or plain libvirt?
iirc Xen Orchestra had some license weirdness that put me off last I looked at it. edit: But looking at it again, it looks fine, so maybe I’m confusing it with some other software.

It’s mainly due to a few things:
-
I sort of like that it’s just different from the other KVM-based solutions that most people commonly use in the self-hosting space, being based on Xen.
-
Xen supposedly has some security advantages over KVM with better isolation between VMs, among a few other benefits.
-
The management philosophy of XCP-ng is different in that the management layer is separate from the bare metal hypervisor itself. For example, I could install Xen Orchestra on my NAS server to create and manage VMs on any Xen servers that I have straight from it, all centralized in one GUI.
-
I personally find the GUI on XO to be a bit more cleaner and organized than the one on Proxmox.

It is popularized and a recommendation made by Tom Lawrence from Lawrence Tech Systems for self-hosting and business use.
That is mainly it for me.
