ProtonVPN and Proton Pass has this too. All are opt out.
Edit: There’s an option to view debug logs in Proton apps. I think they are different from anonymous usage statistics.
Except for F-Droid versions !
My hot take is that for most people telemetry on is fine.
If you have less things to hide and frequently complain that the UI/UX sucks for a lot of the FOSS apps, well now here is your chance to contribute and make things better.
Proton needs it to improve itself. This is on for me for most of apps.
informative and unfortunate
Would have been clear to anyone who read the privacy policy for their services. Telemetry is not a bad thing if it’s done well (and Proton does it very well) and in a privacy preserving manner. As others have pointed out, do send telemetry for projects you wish to help become better and if they are privacy preserving.
Although they could make it more clear to the user on first use and get a clear opt-in (but this will literally kill most user data, since most users don’t bother to opt in). It’s a complex issue
If you are surprised by this post, you are still outsourcing your trust to third parties. Stop outsourcing it, and become responsible for it yourself. Read and understand the services you use.
Those who have an issue with this have no idea what is being collected and/or are extremists who think that collecting telemetry and diagnostic data is evil.
As a positive, it’s anonymous telemetry and not normal telemetry.
Anonymous telemetry is where the collected data is completely anonymous, meaning it does not contain any PII, but generic data.
Regular Telemetry —hopefully we all know what this is.
This is not a major issue. Still, I agree that Proton should’ve made it opt-in.
