London is one of the most surveilled cities in the world, hosting hundreds of thousands of CCTV cameras. Having recently implemented facial recognition technology, the city’s Metropolitan Police released data showing that around 1,035 arrests were tied to it since 2020.
Big Brother Watch, A UK privacy advocacy organization, made a recalculations of the publicly released data. As it turns out, this number came out of a total of 715,296 arrests over the past 5 years, or 0.15%. Out of the 1,035 arrests, only 773 led to criminal charges or police caution.
