So, I have been keep changing my phone number every 6 months for a few years now. It kind of worked (i.e. new prepaid sims are dirt cheap hence reliefing cost of living, I never received any junk / spam / scam calls, I can give a phone number to whatever shops/ service I want to use as its burner number anyways).
However sometimes it gets me into troubles, e.g. accounts registered with old phone numbers, people tried to reach me but I already changed number, have to repeatedly update my contact details to communities that contact me via phone number, etc.
Since last year, I started worrying my footprint as phone numbers will eventually be recycled and reused, and I am getting tired of running into various issues due to this approach. Therefore I am think about to change.
There’s another thread discussing compartmentalising phone numbers, which is what I am planning to do, I am currently trying out MySudo with just my work number. If it works for me, I will implement the following:
NUMBER_TITLE | PURPOSE | PURPOSE_SENSITIVITY | NUMBER_LIFESPAN | TIED_TO_PII | ACTIVATE_FREQ |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
BURNER (PHYSICAL SIM) | DAILY DRIVE | LOW | 6 MONTHS | FALSE | ALWAYS |
WORK (MySudo) | FOR COMPANY AND COLLEAGUES | MEDIUM | TILL CHANGING JOBS | TRUE | WORKING DAYS |
BANK (MySudo) | FOR ALL FINANCIAL INSTITUTION | HIGH | AS LONG AS POSSIBLE | TRUE | WHEN REQUIRED |
GOVERNMENT (MySudo) | FOR ALL GOVERNMENT AGENCIES | HIGH | AS LONG AS POSSIBLE | TRUE | WHEN REQUIRED |
However, it does not address one of my major concern: What about those stupid services that still use stupid SMS as 2FA? Though I have been sharing my accounts with family members, but it only reduces their digital footprint, not mine. And telling them to do it for me seems even worse as I am the one who care, not them.
Hence, PG communities, here’s a poll, what do you do in your life?
- Fxxx digital footprints, just give burner numbers
- Give them a non-burner, but not-in-use phone number (meaning 5th number)
- Give them your daily number, they have your PII anyways
- Fxxx cost of living, if they want phone numbers, ditch them
