There is competition to what this article describes, where user owns their data in their central place:
Rather based on ActivityPub protocol. There was a video somewhere how everything works now, but not sure where. I also tested it practically, this is the demo I believe:
I liked it, it works nice.
All these projects are funded by EU (NLNet) with currently active grants, so there ActivityPub side also works on this what this article describes.
At the moment, BlueSky wins with more advanced protocol, but ActivityPub wins with wide decentralization already. And things evolve with both systems.
But a well written article, which improved my perception of ATProtocol, so I will keep learning more about it.
