I have no idea why would anyone use mostodon or bluesky over nostr.
Nostr doese not have algo standards yet but that model is far superior than these.
Scale matters. Nostr only haa a million users while Bluesky bas >30million and Mastodon >10m
The more decentralised and the more interesting the tech, the fewer users unfortunately…
Nostr < Mastodon < Bluesky < X
The users will increase. X won’t vanish ofcourse, but mostodon & bluesky would prob vanish.
Alas, for most people convenience is the #1 factor and practically the only one. It needs to be really easy and for it to take max 30 seconds to just work.
Also, once an app is established, it’s super hard for people to switch (you have to really f up lol like X). Look at what happened with Google +.
The Bluesky moderation abilities are crazy strong. Marginalized communities can block the hate, and they make interesting content. And onboarding is easy as make an account.
Mastodon is a more open Bluesky. But having to pick a server is a sticking point. Moderation isn’t as powerful as Bluesky, and posts sometimes don’t migrate through the network.
And as @Encounter5729 pointed out, they have bigger networks making their value better for the average user.
It should be pointed out that Reddit/Twitter/Facebook are going to coast along for a generation on inertia alone. Their defects are balanced out by more hardware and faster delivery.
I had to read a user guide for Nostr. This already eliminates 99% of potential users.
Until it isn’t anymore, FB cough cough. History will tell but things have a tendency to repeat if the mechanisms are similar.
But mechanisms are not the same. You have control over what moderation you want. You can also chose custom moderation list.
On the contrary, Facebook was a censorship pool for long, for example banning the CambridgeAnalytica whistleblower in 2016 for the only fact of revealing Facebook contributed to election manipulation.
