Bluesky thoughts

There seems to be a switch from X to Bluesky going on.

Thoughts on Bluesky?

It’s pretty great. The atmosphere on the site is very positive, and it’s pretty close to feature parody with Twitter. Many of the creators I follow are on there. The devs are working on a better discover feed and community notes, so I’m definitely interested in the future of this project

I love feature parody. It’s my favorite kind of feature. The kind where BlueSky clowns Twitter.

I really like Bluesky, so far. Only social media I am truly using.

Source code available as well:

Mastodon.

Mastodon is great but IMO it is too much an echo buble. They are only left-wing, progressive, people. Not saying is bad but I am switching to BlueSky because there I can have a closer tl reality view.

I will admit that I don’t have any idea what left-wing, right-wing, and centrists mean, and I’m glad that this is the case. I don’t want to waste my headspace on such nonsense.

Is it actually decentralized? If not, I don’t really see the point in promoting in over X (the incumbent) or Mastodon (federalized) and Nostr (decentralized).

Its not decentralized, their identity management is currently owned by a single entity.

I just haven’t found a reason to use any of these twitter like services in a meaningful way other then to generate rss feeds for my feeder app. X frontends such as xcancel (nitter instance) seem to be the best in that regard.

That’s me for every social media outlet. I use RSS to keep up with Twitter people and subreddits I want to follow. Friends who.live far away I video call, and those who live near I visit

Social media seems inherently poisonous to me. No nuance, no discussion, just echoes. Wow, I sound so old rn :frowning:

Agree 100%. The world happens on Twitter, there’s no reason to use anything else, unless for following any particular account you want to follow that’s only there.
Use nitter instances, squawker with a new account using an Adguard temp email, etc

The only reason for using anything else is oddly enough the exact reason most people use them. Not for privacy, but for being protected from seeing opposite opinions. If you’re a grown person who needs your safe space, there’s no lack of options: Mastodon, Threads, Reddit, Lemmy, Instagram, YouTube, Tiktok, and probably Bluesky as well. Even Gmail will spam-mark though crime as well.

Hopefully alternative ID servers will leave beta soon

Am I the only one who use twitter like just some sort of a convenient feed reader?
I would like to migrate though to take some distance with Musk but I didn’t like Mastodon when I tried it and Bluesky is not enough populated yet.

never been any different in the past

As with any social network you need to put some effort into choosing a few INTERESTING people to follow, maybe look at who’s following those and pick a few more … and your discovery stream will become useful.

It’s always been like this, to be honest. But the format itself does not induce conversation.

Ohh you beat me to it.

The best place for some balanced conversation is Reddit on the less biased subs. On the night of the US elections, for example, subs like MapPorn were where you’d have to go for some balanced, insightful conversations.

Have you tried using a News Aggregator instead? It basically functions as your own customized feed reader and allows you to not be stuck with just twitter feeds.

I personally use Feeder but there are multiple good options.

I feel like this is not true anymore? Hard to say since being private (so no real numbers), but lots of companies and users stopped using it. There hasn’t been a real switch (like what happened to digg) because the users switched to many different sites instead of just one (threads, mastodon, lemmy, now bluesky, etc.).
