Well… this sounds… interesting, no? I wonder how it’d work with stickers, gifs, location, et. al. Thoughts?
Say no to Telegram!
Telegram doesn’t have E2EE, AFAIK!
Only for “Private chats”, or how they’re called.
@rottenwheel Does this app add E2EE for normal chats?
I want to, but some people that I need to talk to unfortunately only uses them.
I could use another message app but I have not searched for alternative frontends for it (Rakuten Viber).
Honestly, I don’t really see a reason to use Telegram. I get that it’s popular, probably second only to its less privacy-focused sibling, WhatsApp, but if you’re already considering Telegram, why not just go with Signal or Session instead?
Did you even click on the github repository and read the README before posting your reply? cc. @Hiddn
Network effect, feature-rich, slick UI/UX. Stickers, gifs, animated emojis/stickers. 2 GB cloud upload, more when premium subscription is paid. Lots of Internet communities host and run their groups, channels in there.
So you’re basically going with whatever people are using and what’s convenient for you? Look, everyone makes their own choices, and that’s totally fine. But you mentioned things like network effect, feature-rich design, slick UI/UX, stickers, GIFs, and animated emojis or stickers. Signal actually has all of that too. It’s a user-friendly alternative to Telegram, WhatsApp, and similar apps, but with a stronger focus on privacy and anti-censorship.
You also brought up the 2 GB cloud upload, but keep in mind that’s just someone else’s computer storing your files. If anything you upload violates rules, like DRM or anything else, you could face consequences.
And about what you said regarding many online communities hosting their groups and channels there, honestly, that doesn’t really matter much. You’ve got countless websites that can give you all the news you want, and you can easily share that content with others through Signal or Session.
On Signal, you usually need an invite to join a group. But Session offers a bunch of public channels — some are active, some semi-active, and some kind of dead — where you can still talk to people, all while keeping your privacy intact.
I get the appeal of Ombra as an more privacy app, but at the end of the day, the real security of your chats and files depends on Telegram’s servers.
Edit:
- This is only my opinion.
I chose Session over Signal because of some concerns related to Signal.
@isyuricunha Not that there wouldn’t be some concerns related to Session too, but anyway, Session won me (IDK how much time this will last)
I’m guessing until there’s no one else to talk to. All these niche apps suffer the same fundamental weakness - no one is using them.
Yes they are used. They’re also gonna release a Pro Beta version to get money and be able to keep it alive.
