Notability Criteria for “Developer” Role

Hey PG Forums,

I’d like some clarification on who the Developers group is intended for.

The description says that Developers “are people working on some privacy-related project.”

Which of the below qualifies as a privacy-related project?

  • An original privacy tool, usable on its own (ex. encryption tool)
  • An additional privacy mechanism, applied in the context of an existing project (ex. new protocol implementation)
  • Resources or modifications augmenting an existing project, providing additional privacy benefits (ex. privacy browser addon, app addon, app configuration guides)
  • Resources or modifications augmenting an existing privacy project, providing accessibility or usability, but no additional privacy benefits (ex. moderation tools)

Thanks!

Great question. It’s likely that the developer of any project which would be appropriate to post in Privacy > Project Showcase would be eligible to join this group on the forum.

We only have a notability requirement for @verified accounts.

It is probably only this category which may not qualify as a privacy-related project, because it sounds unlikely to be relevant to our community in particular. If someone had a good argument for why people here would be interested in their tool though it could still qualify.

Thanks, Jonah!

This helps me narrow down my options.

My original intention was to use the role to signify in-depth knowledge of the privacy tool in question.

I see that this would be a low bar and I accept that my work may not qualify. This is an understandable decision for the forums.

In closing, I feel that usable security will always be a salient topic (re: moderation, Techlore’s Matrix room comes to mind). I do hope that more individuals prioritize this hoop between the tool and the user.
