Molly lagging behind Signal android updates?

Lately, it seems like Molly has been lagging behind upstream Signal in updates. Is this of any concern security-wise?

Yes, Molly has clearly been lagging behind lately, the application is evolving too slowly, I’m almost thinking of switching back to Signal.

I have switched back at the beginning of the year. Did not see any major development towards new features for a while now. I think they are working on Monero integration, I might switch back after they figure it out.

An update was released a few minutes ago, with a new logo and interface.

Their GitHub page states that Molly updates with Signal changes every two weeks, aside from security patches. They seem to be keeping that schedule, for the most part.

This has gotten quite bad recently. Supposedly they are working on making the updates more automated, but it’s been nearly two months since the last release.

That’s unfortunate. Love Molly.

At this point does it still have advantages than Signal? İs it possible to use Signal without notifications dependent on Google play? I’d happily switch back.

It has been always possible to use Signal without google play services.

Yes but only with heavy battery drain from the persistent WebSocket running in the background. Using Molly with a UnifiedPush Distributor like Sunup or ntfy is much more efficient.

Probably but I have just a 2% battery use from Signal, it’s not that big of a deal.

Hopefully they can finish the automation stuff soon. I’m definitely starting to get a bit worried.

Signal hasn’t adopted any of Molly’s unique features so it still exists for good reasons, we just got to support them the best we can and hope for a quick comeback. It’s not like the project is dead by any means: https://fosstodon.org/@mollyim/116753764625461189

They are very good at updating./s

Starting with v7.68.5-1, we’ve unified Molly and Molly-FOSS into a single fully FOSS app

From johanw in the matrix when asked about valldrac (main molly dev):

He is very busy working on a more automated system to merge upstream commits into Molly. I believe he wants a new beta this week.
