As the title says, I’m looking for a privacy focused Push-To-Talk (PTT) application. I’ve looked at Zello, but I’m wary of their privacy policy. I saw a comment on Reddit suggesting to use Mumble or TeamSpeak.
My use case is secure, real-time communication between 10-15 people.
My criteria are:
E2EE
FOSS
Ability to self-host on a closed network (preferred)
Ability to implement on Raspberry Pi (or similar) devices
iOS/Android and/or webbrowser support
I’m open to collaboration on a project if there isn’t anything readily available.
You found out by yourself: Mumble is the way to go.
I’ve been using TeamSpeak for some time and it’s very good, low latency and no fluff but I do guess that Mumble is just as good given the limited use-case of sending voice over the wire.
Make sure to host the server in a close enough geographical location so that your buddies are not on the opposite side of the planet.
Self-host a Netbird on the server and give access to your buddies if you want to be extra-secure[1], otherwise you can always just expose it to the Internet directly.
A RaspberryPi should indeed be more than enough for the server. As for mobile apps, there are a few but I guess the most common use case is still to use it for e-sport gaming on a desktop, no? The Android version is at least well supported still.
As for Web browser, I am not sure it’s a thing to have either Mumble or TS being available there: a browser is not really needed/optimal for such usage.
