Maybe it’s not the best idea to rely on unpaid hobbyists for this type of work. We can’t just place this at the hands of the FOSS community

not only linux even if you are with windows you are at risk.
Despite the market share desktop Linux is dying.
Longer term, it could come down to the fact that Linux performance on Intel chips may be subpar to ARM and AMD chips. This will really impact cloud providers and their purchases for buildouts of data centers.
Wouldn’t be surprised to see Microsoft sneak their way into the #1 kernel maintainer.
