Instead of using companion app you can get the video link from Video DownloadHelper and use a download manager (like Parabolic, Varia, Persepolisdm, Gopeed or your favorite one). Unlike the companion app a standalone download manager can handle almost any kind of files.
Honestly,
My advice would be to just forget about this extension and the co-app. Just forget completley. Many others have given you some very good solutions you can use to download videos WITHOUT this extension and co-app. You do seem really hell bent on using the co-app though to be a bit blunt. I know you paid for it and all, but if there is an easier solution now available, why not use it it? This is kind of like refusing to stop using windows 95 because you bought a ‘lifetime license’ or something.
On the other hand, if you really really really really want to just use this extension plus co-app, I suggest having a look at this thread in their git hup page: How do I change the location of files to download? · aclap-dev/video-downloadhelper · Discussion #744 · GitHub
Some bloke called GrumpyGrandpa (or similar I can’t remember exactly) does a very good job of explaining why the co-app is a necessary evil. Basicially, it is needed due to a change that happened will all modern web browser extensions (the things they could do as an extension got drastically reduced a few years ago). Have a read, if what you see looks good/trustworthy, download the co-app and use it to your hearts content. I don’t know enough about the developers to make that decision for you though as I have not even heard of the extension to be perfectly honest. You have to make that decision for yourself. They do seem to have a large enough community on GitHub etc, which is always a good sign. Users don’t tend to stick around if they are getting robbed.
Hope this helps. godspeed.

I would suggest using a separate downloader app as well. You won’t even need the extension for certain sites like YouTube; you can directly enter the YT video link in an app like Parabola. I use that extension as well (but not the companion app), but mainly for sites that aren’t easy to download from. I just copy the link provided by the extension (press the 3 dots next to the ‘Download’ button and click ‘Copy URL’) and enter it in my preferred downloader app.
