Introducing Proton Wallet – a safer way to hold Bitcoin

Bitcoin:

  • Arguably even worse privacy than traditional banking because every single transaction is public on the blockchain forever.
  • High transaction fees.
  • Bitcoin is not fungible unlike Monero, gold, and cash.
  • There is only a limited amount of Bitcoin, which encourages hoarding of coins and other nonsense.
  • A very small percentage of people control 90% of the world’s supply of Bitcoin.
  • Monero uses RandomX algorithm which basically means that you can mine Monero with any PC, while with Bitcoin you need a lot of ASICs to gain any reasonable amount of Bitcoin.

I could keep naming the reasons why Bitcoin sucks for hours.

I really hope that Proton Wallet will support Monero soon.

I have access. The main differentiator features so far are:

  • Automatic wallet backup with your Proton account.
  • Automatic integration with Proton Mail, so you can pay other Proton emails.

There is no Silent Payments support, no CoinJoin support (though it seems that it was (maybe still is?) planned because it’s referenced in the code README), no Taproot receiving support, no lightning network support (this also seems planned), no custom node support, etc.

The integration with Proton Mail without any other configuration is nice. However, alternative open standards exist, such as OpenAlias.

Their focus seems to be on making the wallet simple and easy to use. It’s built on BDK.

In its current form, I wouldn’t recommend this wallet to someone who cares about their privacy. Using new addresses isn’t a comprehensive privacy solution. Still, if someone wants a super basic option for getting paid, it’s better than downloading a custodial wallet.

I hope Proton keeps building this product. Personally, I think Monero support is absolutely essential (more so than lightning, CoinJoin, and anything else), and if they’re committed to Rust, then they could build atop Luke’s monero-serai library.

We decided to start with the blockchain that has the highest public awareness since our goal is to reach newcomers, but based on community feedback we can consider adding support for other blockchains in the future. We’ll decide based on input from the community.

Proton doesn’t even support Monero payments themselves, so were you really surprised that this new app doesn’t support it either? :slightly_smiling_face:. And it’s not that people wouldn’t want that.

One user can give 1-3 votes. Let’s assume that every single user gave 2 votes. Since 2018, only around 1400 people voted for having Monero as a payment option, and Proton has 100+ million users.

In this case it makes much more sense to look at all the other suggestions and how much votes they have received. And it seems that Monero suggestion is one of the most requested features.

Just voted for this one. Thanks for sharing. Do we already have one for Monero support in the new wallet?

I’m already starting to lose hope with Proton. One of your most requested payment option is Monero since 2018. And there have been 0 progress since then.

Even though I don’t trust Tuta as much as I used to trust proton, you could pay for your subscription using Monero by using proxystore.

There is probably a reason why they don’t support Monero. It might be something to do with laws, etc.

Losing hope in one of the best privacy and security companies just because they don’t provide a payment method is pretty wild.

Everyone who wants Monero support, please vote.

I dont really understand the priority of this. Cryptocoin shit is not really what is needed for proton to flourish against google, ms, etc.

Features like Sync contacts with phone address book – The Voice of the Proton Community and becoming and integrating LDAP/SSO solutions are.

What is this title? Hold Bitcoin? Why hold and not use? Safer to hold in a hot wallet? Don’t think so.

I am reading about 2FA multisig stuff and Proton sentinel security, is there going to be a singlesig option? What if Proton goes offline or their servers are unavailable for sometime?

Releasing a Bitcoin hot wallet with no lightning support makes no sense nowadays.

Forget also about coinjoin and things like this, Proton is too lawful to even think about implementing something like that.

Also for people asking for Monero support, there is a reason that the most successful wallets don’t support altcoins along with Bitcoin. Bigger attack surface. Better to use specific wallet for each.

Last but not least, buying Bitcoin within the wallet is another red flag. Rip-offs plus bigger attack surface again.

To close in a positive end,
It would be interesting to be able to send Bitcoin as they say, easily, just my emailing another Proton user. Though you need lightning for this, the fees are too high otherwise. Especially for small tips or payments.

It looks like Proton Wallet doesn’t work with JavaScript JIT disabled. I hope that this is something that can be changed.

I can’t unfortunately (@Proton_Team)

I don’t understand the purpose of such a project, Proton is spreading itself too thin I get the impression, Mail, Drive, VPN and Pass, why not, but a crypto wallet… really?
I hope we won’t soon find ourselves with a Proton browser and search engine or Proton messaging in order to absolutely offer alternatives to Google, Microsoft and co, stay focused Proton
