Interview with Carissa Véliz, Author of "Privacy is Power" and "Prophecy"

We sat down with Carissa Véliz, author of Privacy is Power and University of Oxford associate professor, to talk about how predictive AI will make a ‘meritocracy’ impossible, how lifelike chat bots are designed to deceive you, and the importance of privacy in the digital age.

Carissa Véliz is an associate professor at the Institute for Ethics in AI at the University of Oxford, a renowned author and speaker, a board member of the Proton Foundation, and a member of UNESCO’s Women 4 Ethical AI.

Her new book, ‘Prophecy,’ comes out on April 21st. Prophecy is about how extensive use of predictive analytics is undermining our abilities to defy the odds, making systems unaccountable, and increasing risk in business and society while creating a false sense of security.

Saw my YouTube notification the minute it was uploaded, I was surprised it hadn’t been shared on the forum after an hour. Can’t wait to watch this and read Carissa’s book!

The settings are all in different timezones and I might’ve been an hour off last night :skull:

I definitely pre-ordered her new book after watching this one.

It’s all good. I’m impressed and super glad that PG was able to book this interview.

Could you help me with some key parts of the video? The Spanish subtitles aren’t showing up.

I also want to add that the quality of questions were a lot better in this one. And that’s what made for a great interview and quality insight we got from Carissa. Well done @nateb

Interesting take as this one was recorded before the Cindy Cohn interview. What do you think made this one feel “better quality”?

For the record, I actually had a REALLY hard time coming up with questions for this one. If you read the papers I cited (which I strongly suggest doing as they are FANTASTIC and pretty short), Carissa really doesn’t leave much room for questions. She’s very thorough in explaining her position and considering every angle (at least every angle I could think of). It was really hard to think of anything at all to ask her, so I’m actually shocked this one seems stronger given how much I had to really reach just to have anything at all to ask.

What I liked more was that you asked follow up questions of sorts from her previous work to add to what she already said in a newer context somewhat. This shows that you did enough research and also makes the interviewer feel appreciated.

Your effort in finding and asking good questions showed. And that’s what I also mean by quality of questions.

Carissa Véliz is one of the most important and interesting people in the privacy space. It’s a privilege to have her on our channel. What a great interview @nateb - I’ve already per-ordered the book!
