I’m tempted to create a new FB account just for Marketplace, but the problem is that I’m afraid the new account might scare away potential buyers. I’m not a huge social media user so I don’t know the full effect when I go and create an ad. I’ve actually never used Marketplace before despite the feature being available for years. My FB account is private and has been so for many years. I don’t actually have to go back and make any posts private as none are public. What I don’t want is for my ads to then appear on my friends’ feeds. Does anyone here know what happens when I go to create an ad and whether it’s then broadcast to my entire friends list that I have something on Marketplace? Avoiding FB Marketplace is difficult as people are abandoning platforms like Craigslist and Kijiji in North America so I don’t know what else to do.
I think facebook has option in privacy settings to disallow sharing your info with ads you are associated with your friends.
That being said, use facebook in a browser which blocks trackers like brave or firefox (with ubo), use good dns for blocking ads and trackers and only use facebook in that container.
However if you’re really focused on marketplace and getting notifications as fast as possible is a priority then I guess you need to install the app.
If that’s the case, don’t give any extra permissions, utilize a good tracker blocking dns and utilize as much privacy settings as facebook allow you to be.
Sidenote: I don’t think new account will flag people as long as they cab verify someway or another that it’s not a scam account.
Don’t be afraid. If you need it then use it. Privacy doesn’t mean to be black and white in approach.
Hi, it’s not exactly what I’m asking. Have you used FB before? Thx for trying to help though.
Yes used it from 2011 until 2019. Then deleted my account. I think you were asking for whether ads you post will be shared to all your friends? Answer is No, if you modify privacy settings on your account.
It probably will/should cause people to be cautious. FB marketplace like any other open marketplace has mostly decent people, but also attracts scammers and frauds. Age of account / reputation is a crude but useful heuristic when there isn’t a lot of other info to go on and you want to err on the side of caution.
I guess one approach would be start by buying and selling some low risk, low $$ items, and simple physical things that wouldn’t be attractive to a scammer, and won’t raise red flags with whatever algorithms FB uses (e.g. Clothes, shoes, basic hand tools, books, things that people don’t have to be so cautious about).
In terms of the age of the account, there is not much you can do about the age of a new account, other than be patient and age it.
But do you know if posting an ad means my entire friends list will see my ad on their feed?
I’m not sure
