Guide: How to get high video quality, 1080p and higher with Invidious over Tor

I almost stopped using Invidous because since a few months, it only can show Videos with a video quality of 360p and lower, because Youtube blocked higher Video Resolution. 360p Videos are unwatchable. It’s just bad.
That’s why I started going directly to Youtube.com in TorBrowser only.
I never got blocked or any captchas.
For me on Desktop, Tor is fast enough to watch Videos in 1080p.
On my old mobile device 720p is fine and works well.

But you can actually get maximum Video quality with Invidous if you enable DASH in settings.
Go on any Invidious Instance to settings.

Go to “Preferred Video Quality”
Select DASH

Then scroll all the way down to the bottom and click on “Save preferences”.

Now, you can manually select the Video quality you want for every Video you want to watch.
But if you don’t have an account you need to do it again manually if you automatically delete cookies or use Tor or Mullvad Browser.
I highly recommend to use Tor Browser, because Invidous doesn’t proxy the Videos by default. You have to enable that manually in settings again. But then you need to trust the Invidous Instance 100%. And still then, traffic analysis attacks work easy.

Remember that VPNs are not anonymous or even private.
Mullvad does a great job with DAITA, but VPNs still only provide extremely basic privacy against ad companies to not link sessions.
People should be using Tor as much as possible.

Good to know:
It*s being discussed if Invidious will enable DASH by default on all Instances. I don’t know why they haven’t done that already, but i am also no developper.

Right now a lot of Instances work and aren’t getting blocked by Youtube anymore.
api.invidious.io

dash is useless by default, plus it can be enabled in the config genius (hoster one too), dash by default is a waste of bandwith, to stream a 1080p video you need 60mbps, over tor that’s incredebly resource intensive, tor is not made for watching streaming content, go back to mullvad+invidious or piped.

No that’s not true, it has been fixed, you may have encountered one of the only non updated instance.

Thanks for your message.
I just checked most Instances on api.invidious.io and none of them have DASH enabled by default.
Maybe you mean something else

Yea they don’t because why would they??? Waste resources for you to have better quality? by default it’s just 360p and then it’s DIY for more

true, but depends on your threat model
By the way: Piped doesn’t work, but Mullvad is great.

still, tor is not intended for that, you just waste bandwith for other people

They don’t waste any ressources, because the Videos are not getting proxied.
Only googlevideo.com wastes any ressources and bandwith if you as a user choose higher video qualities. The Invidious Instance only sort of scrapes the Comments, Links, description and so on.

If you watch sensitive Videos, like conroversial political Videos, then it’s worth using something which provides real privacy like Tor, unlike VPN’s which just change the Point of faillure to trust to them, instead of your ISP.

Invidious can by default proxy video, so yes it just harms them to do 1080p by default. Plus other people exists and if 100 people watch 1080p on one instance, don’t you think it will get cluttered?

It probably won’t even go to 100 people.

Plus vps plans have a bandwith limit, so they should spend more money just for 1 service?

Just make sure that Videos don’t get proxied by default
But yes, everything costs money.
Ressources shouldn’t be wasted
